The St. James was a wonderful place to stay while biking the trail from Red Wing to Cannon Falls. My room was beautiful and the whirlpool tub was wonderful after a long day on the bikes.

Breakfast in the restaurant was terrific and the sturdiwheat pancakes are not to be missed.

Red Wing is charming and the St James is situated at the heart of things.

The main downfall of this place is the train track running behind it. Not only are there trains going by a half block away....they are going by all the time including the middle of the night! It would not have been a big deal if a train went by a couple times, but yikes....probably one an hour at times. For the price of nearly $200 a night that is just nuts. The room was fine but even without the train not worth the price. There is certainly updating that could be done. The place seemed near vacant when we were there on a weekend. Not sure what that says.

We reserved at the St James for Valentines weekend. The hotel is well kept and a nice getaway along the river. Beautiful and historic rooms and easy access to downtown. Try the breakfast at the Veranda and drinks at Jimmy's. Some packages include coupons to the hotel's restaurants. We took the train for our stay - and the train was two hours late both ways, so book carefully for the train package. Also, the hotel did not come to meet us at the station like they advertised, and car rental through the hotel was a hassel. Otherwise, we had a great stay and recommend the St. James for couples.

Room Tip: Look for packages online

The actual rooms have a B & B feel. Rooms were quite large. The mattress was great. The train as well as the traffic were loud and kept me up but nothing a sound machine can't take care of. I had to wash the bathroom floor as it was quite dirty, however the rest of the room was clean. Restraunt food was tasty and of good quality.

The St James is a beautiful historic hotel located on the main street of downtown Red Wing, Minnesota. It is very much decorated in the original style of the late 1800s, and history buffs will probably love the photographs, furniture and accents that line the rooms. The room (#209) was comfortable, a good size, and fairly quiet. However, the window wouldn't open and it was quite stifling since the a/c system looked to be very old. Also we both found the mattress extremely uncomfortable and were told that some beds had been replaced however ours was not one of them.

My biggest takeaway from the hotel, however, is that there is a distinctly spooky vibe. Neither of us slept much that night and it wasn't because of the mattress. We experienced a few strange things and were glad to see the sun come up. I'm a chicken, so I wouldn't stay here again. But if you're a non-believer, go right ahead.

Perfect place for a anniversary get away. Plenty to do, if you want, and see. Beautiful hotel with a classic look. Great food and entertainment at the pub but other options available if that is not your style.

Rooms were very spacious and had one of the best beds I have ever slept on.

Room Tip: Rooms available that look out at the river.

Red Wing is a quaint river town and when business took me to the area, my client recommended the St. James. Normally, I cringe at "historic" properties as sometimes you end up with wierd floor plans, balky systems and the like. The St. James was a pleasant surprise in that regard. I was in the "historic" side of the building.

The room was described as a queen but the bed appeared to be king size and was very comfortable. The room was showing evidence of wear with the frilly wallpaper starting to come loose and nicks and hasty patches scattered about. As a business traveler, I was hoping for more than the tiny desk that barely fit my laptop. The free wireless internet signal was weak but the speed was excellent. There was a wide screen hi-def TV with a full basic cable channel selection, but none of those were hi-def.

My room faced a side street but still had a partial view of the river. Unfortunately, there is a (very) active train track between the hotel and the river. The train noise itself was not tht bad but they had to blast their horns as they passed by the hotel. This could go on until the wee hours.

I had a meal at the Verandah restaurant that faced the river and at Jimmy's pub on the 5th floor. Both were adequate, but it should be noted that there is no food service in the hotel after 9:00. Night owls and late-arrivers beware.
