We were excited to try out this new Red Wing brew pub, located not too far from downtown (and easily bikeable from the Cannon Valley Trail). We ordered a sample flight of beer, then had a hard time deciding which ones to order for full pints. We loved the stout and the IPA was solid, but the Remmler's Royal lager (not normally what I would drink) was the most interesting - and tasty! (It's made using an old recipe from 1869 by Adolf Remmler from Red Wing Brewing Co.) More like a heavy amber beer than a lager, the 6.5 ABV Remmler's has a great mouth feel and huge malty taste, with a subtle bitter/hop bite at the finish. Superb!
We had hoped to buy a growler of Remmler's on our way out, but they were holding off on growler sales for another week or two to keep up with demand and make sure they had enough beer to serve with the tasty pizza. Next time we go, though, we'll be grabbing a growler or two of Remmler's for sure!
The food was also excellent. They no longer serve soup and sandwiches, deciding to focus on pizza instead. The focus pays off, with a wonderful pie made with a slightly sweet, crispy-chewy crust from a local bakery. It was one of the best pizza's we've had.
The owners are incredibly friendly. They welcome everyone at the door, and seem so happy that people love their beer and pizza. The atmosphere inside the brewpub is great, with old beer signs and other historical touches. The view out the front window isn't too great, but otherwise, this is great choice for pizza and beer, and almost reason enough to visit Red Wing.
