“Absolutely the best choice a couple can make to spend an evening - or longer - in Red Wing, MN”
Reviewed February 28, 2010

Among the choices of Bed & Breakfast spots in Red Wing, MN, the Candlelight Inn is cleaarly a standout. There are many tangible reasons why this is true, including the beautiful Victorian era home and amenities to the location/proximity to downtown Red Wing. However, it's the intangible aspects of the Candlelight Inn that provide the real draw and contribute to the high level of satisfaction one receives for a stay. Without a doubt, the B & B experience is as much a reflection of the passion of the owner/propriters as is the physical characteristics of the residence itself. Lynette and Zig Gudrais of the Candlelight Inn are warm, inviting owners/hosts. They provide the added touches that separate a good B & B from and excellent B & B. It's not an easy vocation to manage a B & B but Lynette and Zig make it look easy. Yhe rooms are unique and impeccably furnished and maintained. The wine and cheese and other assorted small plates each evening are a great touch. The morning coffee & tea cart, along with fresh-baked pastries are fantastic. And the breakfasts are absolutely kick-butt :-) You must stay here - a wonderful, romantic place to get away for a night or a week.

During our stay, we enjoyed the afternoon appetizers; the wonderful breakfasts, the opportunity to visit with our hostess and learn about the history of the house; the morning beverage delivered to our door, announced by a music box. We felt the service was top rate and the management of the Candlelight Inn very professional.

We stayed two nights and had two rooms. The first room was very attractive but had a very small "closet" bathroom with very little counter space to set out makeup, tooth brushes, etc. The weather was extremely frigid when we visited and consequently, heating was difficult to regulate. That room, being on the second floor, was too warm; we were able to choose a room on the first floor for the second night. This room was cooler, had a very large bathroom, and was perfect. Both of our rooms had very comfortable beds and cozy bedding.

The location being close to downtown was definitely an asset. I loved returning to the house and having its outdoor lights brightly lit and snow laden. It was a welcoming sight. The host and hostess provided helpful recommendations for local restaurants, including menus for guests to view. Had the weather been warmer, we would have enjoyed walking from the B & B downtown to explore the shops and sights.

We liked the the town and learning about its history,as well as the house's history. The rooms were very quiet and relaxing. There were pennies cleverly hidden in objects around the room and interesting things to explore in the room--books, antiques, etc. Having breakfast with the other guests gave us a chance to get to know each other a bit and our hostess joining us was an added plus.

On the negative side, I disliked the 'closet' bathroom and sink in the our first room. Also the front door was very awkward to open since the lock was so low. And I would have liked milk as a beverage for breakfast. A very small list of negatives; a much longer list of positives at the Candlelight Inn.

The Candlelight Inn was a great get a way. We celebrated New Years Eve with friends in Red Wing and enjoyed Lynette and Zig's beautiful Inn. The house was full of guests and beautiful sights and sounds for the holiday's. The other guests were fun to visit with and everyone enjoyed the house and the stay. Breakfast was a buffet , which was very good.
Lynette answered lots of questions about the house. The Inn is decorated with all the touches of a B& B and they have thought of everything. Thank you for a great stay.

Breakfasts were excellent, room was nice, wine and snacks on arrival was an added touch and coffee and small cakes outside our room three quarters of an hour before breakfast was welcome.

Hostess was charming and made us feel welcome and at home.

We came across this gem after the hotel that we wanted to stay at was booked and they recommended this Inn. We stayed two nights and the rooms were nice and clean. Each morning the Innkeeper put fresh muffins and coffee at your door as an appetizer until breakfast. Yummy! The breakfasts were amazing... definitely the best B&B breakfasts we have ever had. Our first breakfast we were the only guests and after the delicious meal, the Innkeeper came out and we had a wonderful conversation. The next morning the house was full and the breakfast table was packed. Though the first half an hour was filled with awkward conversation, the Innkeeper assisted in starting a good conversation. It was a delightful experience and if we come back to the area again, we will definitely stay there!

I had to return to Minnesota for a 50 year class reunion in Rochester, MN so we got to stay for the rest of the trip in Red Wing, a beautiful city by the Mississippi River. The Candlelight Inn is gorgeous Victorian inn. Really a very neat place to stay with so many places being in walking distance. The food was outstanding and so good, as always. This is not the first time that we have been there. Each time has been fabulous with very luscious breakfasts. Lynette seems to know what their guests like and cooks all from scratch. We enjoyed being pampered. We were there for three nights and days on September 20, 23, and 24 of this year. Enjoyed the fresh flowers in the room and in the dinning area. Great little library for extra information on the area and lots of historical information. Nice to have a place just to sit and read the paper. The innkeepers are awesome as they will get you what you want.

stayed at the candle light inn b&b. this was our 6th visit there. actually we were married there 7 years ago and we try to return every year. once again we had the most pleasant-relaxing-revitalizing stays all coupled with a warm visit with two great inn keepers. the breakfast continues to be outstanding and as usual we receive a little something extra - champange and a gift certificate to a local restaurant for a night of dining. we are already looking forward to our next visit to the candle light inn and the great city of red wing.
