“Excellent Customer Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2010

My husband and I had a terrible experience trying to move me to Duluth for a new job into a temporary apartment. It didn't work out and we had to find a place that would take me and our pets and finally we found the Americinn in Proctor. The woman checking us in was extremely helpful and friendly, we ate at the attached restaurant at a discount and stayed in a nice, comfortable room with one bed, microwave and fridge. It was appointed just like a Comfort Suites room, just a bit smaller. The breakfast was wonderful - make your own waffles. The staff was just so friendly and helpful to us after such a terrible experience otherwise that I had to come on and write this review. For the money, this is a very nice hotel and I would recommend it if you need a clean, quiet, comfortable place to stay and aren't looking for someplace close to the mall, downtown or waterfront, as you're going to drive about 10-15 minutes to those places.

Americinns have advertising in their brochures boasting about the soundproof rooms.
You could hear as if there was a sheet between the rooms instead of actual walls.
Pretty remote. 13km from the mall. Staff didn't give you the
warm fuzzies. Would not stay again.

A seasoned traveler and business professional, I have several favorite hotel brands, AmericInn being one of the top 2. This property is fast becoming the equivalent of a Super 8. Wafer Thin pillows, loud parties, and little to no care from the staff. We stayed here as part of the Duluth Airshow, and have done so in years past. Each year, it seems the hotel loses some of it's charm. It's a great location, and plenty of room. Microwave & Fridge in each room as well as a 25" TV. Our room, however, showed a lot of wear. And $103 for a single handicapped room is fifty dollars too much. My next stay at this property will be arguably different.

My husband and I, along with my in-laws, stayed here for two nights over New Year's 2008. The main reason we picked this hotel was due to an AmericInn hotel gift card (actually issued as a credit card) my mother in law had bought us for Christmas the year before.

The hotel itself was very clean and nicely decorated, meeting the same standard of quality I have come to expect of an AmericInn, and had the standard set of amenities as other hotels of that chain. The room my husband and I stayed in had a sofa and coffee table instead of a second bed, which was nice for playing games with my in-laws. Our room also had a refrigerator, which many hotels in this class do not include in an average room. This hotel allows pets, as my in-laws were able to bring their dog along, and does not require pet owners to stay in smoking rooms. The restaurant which was attached to the hotel served very good food, though it did require reservations. Overall, we had no complaints about the condition of the property or its amenities, but we did have a number of problems with the customer service.

When we arrived for check-in, there was a slow-moving line at the front desk since there was only one employee handling both check-ins and answering the phone. We overheard him mention on the phone ski and stay packages they offered for nearby Spirit Mountain; that piqued our interest since we planned on skiing that weekend. When he checked us in, we inquired about upgrading our room to a ski and stay package (which offered a significant discount on lift tickets), and he said we could do that but just come to the front desk the next day and say we wanted ski passes and they would add the cost to our room. We had a significant check-in delay due to the gift card we used to reserve our room, which ended up being because the full balance of our stay was greater than the value of the gift card. We had to present our normal credit card instead.

The next morning, we inquired about adding ski passes to our room, but the employee at the desk that morning informed us that no we would not be able to upgrade and that all of the ski and stay passes had been claimed for that weekend. He did offer us $5 off coupons for lift tickets. It was a nice gesture, but it was still frustrating to have two employees give us conflicting information about the ski package.

At check out, my husband found that we were only able to apply $125 of the $150 value of the gift card to our hotel room. When we stayed at the AmericInn in Pequot Lakes, the exact same thing happened with our other gift card, and the hotel staff was very friendly and said that they would give us the full $150 credit and handle it themselves since it was a gift card issued by their hotel chain. The staff at this hotel would only let us charge the $125, and did not care to assist us in figuring out why we could not use the full value of the card because "we are an independently owned franchise that did not issue the card". This made my husband very angry, since the staff handled the situation in a poor manner compared to the staff in Pequot Lakes. So we were left with a gift card with a $25 balance and will be charged a monthly fee on the remaining balance starting 90 days after the card's activation, unless we find a way to use the remaining balance by then.

Needless to say, I highly recommend staying away from AmericInn's gift cards as we had problems both times we tried to use them. But we were also left with negative feelings towards this particular AmericInn due to the poor customer service experiences we had. Because of that, we will probably not choose to stay here again.

The rooms were nearby to the front desk and ample parking helped make the trek to them easy. The swimming pool appeared small but was not very busy during our stay there.

Our room featured two queen size beds, mid-sized TV, separate sink area and a mini-fridge and microwave (a great touch, especially with the restaurant next door). The view out the rooms leaves something to be desired, but in fairness it is actually located in Proctor and is towards the bottom of the hill.

The location of this hotel is excellent if you have a vehicle and are trying to stay out of downtown Duluth. It is only a 10 minute drive down a quiet residential road to Miller Hill Mall, and the highway connects up with the Interstate, making travel to Canada very smooth and easy, as you can avoid the city (and its maze of curving, one-way streets) altogether. The downside of this is that it is a much longer drive to the waterfront, but unless it is a destination it isn't a problem.

The complimentary breakfast there was standard fare (toast, bagels, cereal, coffee, juice), except for the make your own Belgian waffles, which were fool-proof and wonderfully delicious. The staff at this particular location were friendly, helpful and efficient, even during the busy season at the hotel's peak hours.

The restaurant, which is attached to the hotel but "not part" of it, was packed full but we still got a booth seat. The food there is excellent, and their steak is top-notch for the city. The prices were quite affordable, and the side dishes they come with are plentiful and delicious; that you can get many of thier signature dishes in combination platters was a real bonus.

All in all, an excellent stay and a pleasant surprise. I only booked this hotel because there were no others to be had within the city itself, but it ended up being a very enjoyable evening. Even if I don't stay there again (I usually choose the Days Inn across from the mall for its price and location) I will definitely be back at their restaurant.

  • Liked — The location was convenient off the highway, and outside of the downtown
  • Disliked — The swimming pool area was smaller than usual

Very clean, very quiet, well-appointed rooms. Average free breakfast, except for the do-it-yourself waffles, which are outstanding. Staff was friendly, polite, and efficient. Although this location seems to be remote from the hustle and bustle of downtown Duluth, it is close to the interstate, and about a 10 minute easy drive to the downtown area. Unless you do not have a car and need to be in walking distance to the downtown area, this is an excellent choice. The Black Woods Restaurant, which is physically attached, but not financially affiliated, serves good food for the area, which means mediocre food.

Same quality AmericInns seen elsewhere. This hotel is not located on the waterfront, in fact it is in Proctor, MN, up the hill from Duluth harbor a 6-7 miles on I35, exit US2. Clean, quiet, friendly service. Restaurant adjacent, but I didn't eat there. Ample parking.
