Extraordinary - what a find!
We stayed at Domaine de Montechevreuil for a few days at the end of July and because of the timing (busiest weekend of the year and all that) I had been concerned, expecting traffic jams and crowds everywhere - not a bit of it. Situated near Beauvais, handily located between Amiens and Paris on the A16 (thoroughly recommend this route, achievable from Calais in a couple of hours) we found Montechevreuil to be quiet, charming and thoroughly “French” which is what we wanted from our short break.
Now to the heart of the matter - the Domaine itself is in the grounds of a ruined chateau, incredibly atmospheric, surrounded by a large deer park, lovely views, wonderfully tranquil. The accommodation is simply stunning - we had a huge apartment suite for a modest amount of Euros with sweeping views across the park. This has to be seen to be believed - I would not be able to do justice in a few words, the house is beautifully decorated with antiques, spacious and elegant.
Our hosts were charming and helpful, the breakfast in typical French style. It’s quite close to Beauvais for sight-seeing, but the main attraction has to be the location itself which would be perfect for a few days at ease, especially when en-route to further south or perhaps for someone wanting to visit but not stay in Paris.
I think we were very fortunate to find Montechevreuil, it suited our purpose exactly - to give 14-year-old granddaughter a taste of “real France”, speak the language and enjoy the culture (briefly). It clearly has yet to be discovered by the British tourist so I do hope that readers of this review will check it out and benefit from this very special destination.
