“Quick night away”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

My husband and I decided to this during the middle of the week as a way to just get away for a night. The weekends here were booked, so we went on a Wednesday night. We had a later check in but were given ample information and hospitlatity to feel welcome despite the fact that there was no one there when we arrived (which we knew would be the case)! We felt like we had the whole place to ourselves (and I think in face we were the only guests this night. The room was lovely and the attention to details and history of the place was outstanding. In the am we enjoyed a beautiful run on the Gateway paved bike/running trail and saw wild turkeys, horses and cows. The housekeep and Choco the lab greeted us in the am and the breakfast was wonderful. We had asked for an earlier breakfast last minute, and though our timing was poor, they were able to get something out for us a half hour earlier then normal. Overall, recommend this as a quick getaway not far from the Cities, yet close enough to arrive after work and feel like you are on vacation.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Robert Frost room - near the stairs, but very quiet. Windows look out to the front...

My daughter gave my new husband and I a gift of a night at your Outing Lodge, was very disappointed. We checked in on Aug 30th and there was a strong musty smell through out. The lobby was the only thing empresive at all. Our room, the Bob Dylan, was very small and the only place to sit was the bed..the two chairs looked like they would break if you sat in them. The bathroom was a joke, a Jacuzze looked very old and not any to clean, rocks held in place so you could only turn the hot and cold so far. As for breakfast, was a buffet, no different then most hotels, only didn't start serving til 9am. We left by 8am. Would never recommend.

Room Tip: Don't stay here

We are very sorry to hear that your stay at our rustic B&B did not meet your expectations. The Outing Lodge is a very unique B&B, located in a very old property (the historic Washington County Poor Farm, founded in 1858). A B&B is a very different concept than 'standard chain hotel' or franchise. We are very sorry to hear of your dissapointing experience with our particularly 'rustic style'.
While on a normal basis we serve breakfast starting at 9 am, we do offer options for 'early breakfast' or 'breakfast upgrade' or other special requests (these details can be arranged at the time of making or confirming the reservation).
Again, we would like apologize for the inconveniences you suffered during your stay. We sincerely appreciate your feed-back: we can only improve if we know where our shortcomings are.

My husband and I stayed here last week for a night's getaway. It was lovely. The lodge has so much character and potential for the future too. We enjoyed the quiet, the lovely library where we played Scrabble, and our beautiful room, The Robert Frost. We'd come back in a heartbeat. Delicious breakfast as well.

My husband and I stayed here for our 36th anniversary. We got in after check in time but the staff couldn't have been more helpful and had the keys waiting for us at the front desk. We enjoyed dinner in downtown Stillwater, just a quick 5 minutes or so away. The next morning, our breakfast was delicious and we headed out for golf later in the day. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone needing a night away from it all.

My wife and I read some great reviews and decided to give this place a try and we were very happy with it. My only regret is I wish we would have stayed 2 nights! So quiet and peaceful, clean rooms, and romantic settings ideal for couples to sneak away on the weekend. The location is only 30 minutes from Minneapolis, so it's so easy to get to! Walking in downtown Stillwater(which is a 5 minute drive) was very fun as well. If you like B&B's, put the Outing Lodge on your list.

Room Tip: Robert Frost! No HotTub, but really luxorious room.

Making a reservation was a hassle; their reservation policies are not clear and don't make much sense, also you can't make a reservation too far in advance. But the stay itself was lovely; the staff were friendly, breakfast was good, and the room was clean.

Beautiful old house and lovely garden. B & B is located in a regional park with hiking trails. Breakfast was very tasty. I would definitely recommend this place, especially for a nice romantic getaway. It would also be a beautiful venue for a wedding.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
19th Century History Preserved at the Outing Lodge European style 19th century country home, surrounded by lawns and gardens with 300 acres of wooded park land ~ a place where people would go to get away from modern city life. Pine Point was founded in 1858 as Minnesota's second "poor farm," a home for the chronically indigent or those temporarily down on their luck. Stillwater was a wealthy community in 1850, the territorial capital. In this abundant atmosphere, a desire to help the less fortunate culminated in the construction of this poor farm. The prize-winning dairy farm became both a home and a workplace to thousands of needy for almost 100 years. When the farm was closed in 1957, the land was planted in pine trees, now Pine Point Park. The house went on for 20 years as a Rest Home. In the 1980s, to save it from proposed demolition, Lee Gohlike began its renovation. He gutted its interiors with a reverence for its historic past: wide-planked wooden floors cut from old pine beams provide a perfect backdrop to the many elegant antique furnishings, numerous candelabra and massive fireplaces. Featured in Midwest Traveler, Star Tribune and other local & national publications, this beautiful Georgian home is a destination for exclusive retreats & events. Guests enjoy cross-country skiing, horseback and biking trails connecting to the Metro system. Theme dinner calendar of events. ... more   less
