Archer House River Inn

This is an old building in an old town--actually a few buildings cobbled together. The halls ARE narrow and creaky and the rooms on the small side compared with how hotels are built today. I have stayed twice--once with a friend and once visiting with my children. The rooms are pleasant, the beds are comfortable and it's pretty quiet. A nice base to explore other small towns in the area.

To visit our daughters at Carleton College, my wife and I spent the weekend before last in beautiful Northfield, MN -- the home of Malt-O-Meal and the town where the James Gang (who were Confederate terrorists, by the way) robbed their last bank. We stayed at the Archer House.

If I were a proper reviewer I would be able to tell you something about the history of the place (other than that it seems really old), but I can't, so I'll just opt for the basics: two blocks from the Carleton campus, up a flight of creaky stairs from a cozy lobby off the historic main street, we had a fine queen room with a comfortable bed and a modern bath. What's not to like? We definitely recommend the hotel.

We also observed that Northfield (town tag line: Cows, Colleges and Contentment) could probably support a restaurant or two that does more with sustainable/local ingredients. Eating vegetarian in NoFo was less delicious than ideal. (Some notable exceptions: We liked Chapati, the Indian restaurant in the same building as the Archer House, and, up in Minneapolis, the Mill City Cafe.) For the moment anyway, you're probably not visiting Northfield for the dining.

Charming old hotel, nicely remodeled, with lots of original character (narrow, winding hallways, creaking floor boards, tilted stair railing, old plumbing that doesn't allow for hot water early in the AM). The rooms are small, but the bed was very good. The hotel backs up to the river. Be advised, the locks to the rooms do not lock of their own accord. We left early in the morning, not realizing we were leaving the room unlocked all day. The staff could have been a little more congenial. But overall, it was a pleasant stay. There is a bakery next door for coffee and tea, but it's not information that is readily provided.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the larger rooms because it was the last available room. It was very small!

The Archer House is old and full of character -- sloping floors, a maze of hallways, eclectic furnishings, steep staircases. The location is wonderful. We were in Northfield to visit Carleton, and we parked our car in the back lot and never moved it -- everything was within easy walking distance. Our room was a bit small and dark, but it was fine for a couple of nights. We had what was called a "large" room, which suggests that the small rooms must be tiny. But the room was perfectly clean and comfortable, despite the sound of the train across the river. Service was excellent. The Indian restaurant in the building serves some of the best Indian food I've ever had, and the Tavern restaurant in the basement was great. Definitely the best place to stay in Northfield.

Room Tip: The pictures on the website are a bit deceptive. The rooms are smaller than they appear, so opt for...

We stayed at The Archer House when we went to Northfield to visit our daughter and friends of ours. We spent one night at The Archer House and found it to be a nice, quiet place to stay. The lobby is quiet and nicely decorated. We chose a lower price room because we would be arriving rather late and leaving early the next morning. We felt like we were staying in someone's home - very lovely decor. Our room was very small so next time we would choose a more expensive room. There is a shower curtain for a door to the bathroom which might bother some people and we didn't have a hair dryer and they did not have one at the front desk. These things didn't seem to matter as the atmosphere was so unique and it was a nice change from staying in a chain hotel. We also enjoyed dinner and drinks in their basement. Delicious food and relaxing atmosphere.

This is an old hotel with a lot of what I'll kindly refer to as "character". But, options are limited in Northfield and in our experience Archer House offers the best accommodations in the area. Front desk and staff are friendly and helpful, rooms are clean and location is ideal for visiting Carleton and St. Olaf. The recent renovation is complete and we found our bed to be very comfortable and everything in the room other than the black out shade to be in good working order.

Sadly while the location is terrific and staff is good the beds are so uncomfortable in some of the rooms one cannot sleep. Plus wedding central the weekend we stayed and LOUD!!!

The staff tried to get it under control to no avail.

This experience could be so much better with some money invested in better beds and doors on the bathrooms. Ewww. Love the idea of the old hotel and does have it's high points but twice in different rooms beds very unforgiving.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Archer House River Inn occupies more than a central location in Northfield. For generations of guests and locals, it IS Northfield - a geographical and architectural landmark, a host to history for nearly 140 years, and an exemplar of the town's spirit of hospitality. Built in the French Second Empire style, the four-story red brick building is grand in design, rich in character, and impressive in its amenities - which include two full-service restaurants, a coffee shop, riverside lounge, conference space and more. Yet with just 36 rooms, no two of which are identical, the inn is intimate in scale and unique in feel. The Archer House also boasts the city's best location, straddling the town's main thoroughfare and the Cannon River. Beyond its prominent setting and venerable history, something else makes the Archer House special: a spirit reflected by the staff's pride in upholding a 140-year legacy of caring for guests, and the ownership's loving stewardship of a property that embodies the heart and soul of Northfield. ... more   less
