Riverdown B & B
Ranked #1 of 2 Exton B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 23, 2013

We have just returned after staying one night here so we could see our son at the CTCRM for families day. We had booked a night at a nearby bed and breakfast but was let down by them when they failed to collect us from the station. After ringing around we were given Jan and Tim's number and felt very relieved that we would have somewhere to stay with reliable hosts.
We were very happy with Riverdown as it is in a beautiful setting at the end of a pretty lane, walking distance to the CTCRM if needed as well as Exton station and the only nearby pub (we don't drive so need to find amenities in walking distance!) the Puffing Billy, which is more costly than your normal pub grub but provided us with an excellent meal, (though more choice might have been appreciated). The whole of the downstairs is for guests and we were given a beautiful room, very spacious and nicely decorated, along with a lovely bathroom and large shower. The room opens up to the garden where you can sit outside and enjoy the peace of the countryside (although the train runs at the end of the garden it didnt spoil anything for us and stops at night) Jan didnt have to take us in as she had just come home from holiday but kindly offered us what was to be a lovely place to stay. If we had more time and could drive we we recomend this to anyone wishing to explore the local countryside as well as Exeter which is around 20 mins away with lots of history to see. There is even a country path close by which is nice to take a stroll along after having a meal. The cooked breakfast was good and again Jan and Tim put themselves out as we had to be at the camp for 7.45am with Tim being kind enough to give us a lift to the gates. We will be booking this again if needed for the Passing out parade in Feb next year. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: There are two rooms here, one double and the other twin, we prefer an ensuite so would choose the do...

This was a much needed weekend away, and Jan made it very special indeed. Perfect location, beautiful house and excellent hosts. The whole of the ground floor is for the guests including a sitting room and a kitchen. The double room has a large ensuite and doors out into the garden. Everywhere is spotlessly clean, warm and cosy and well appointed. This B & B is definately a hidden gem.

This is a really lovely b & b in the village of Exton, over looking the Exe Estuary. Jan and Tim are excellent hosts and the facilities are first class. The downstairs is for bed & breakfast guests, and has 2 bedrooms, ours was a very spacious double with a lovely ensuite shower room, and also a kitchen for the use of guests, fridge, microwave, and tea/coffee making facilities. Breakfast is served in the dining room next to the kitchen with a good selection of hot and cold foods. It is set in a most beautiful part of Devon with stunning views across the Estuary. We will definitely be staying here again, loved it.

I thoroughly recommend Riverdown - Firstly it is in a wonderful location overlooking the Exe Estuary but in a quiet secluded spot at the end of a little lane so no through traffic.
Jan ably assisted by Tim looked after us in a most warm and friendly manner and the rooms bathrooms stting rooms etc are of the very highest standards - in addition there is a kitchen for the use of guests to make snacks and hot and cold drinks, it is home from home.

Room Tip: All the rooms are roomy and light and each has underfloor heating which can be controlled by a therm...

It was a last minute decision to stay at Riverdown for Families day at CTCRM but what a good move. The house is in a fabulous location and is imaculate. Whats more is it is less than five minutes from the camp entrance. Jan and Tim make you welcome immediately and it seemed like home from home. There are 2 rooms available, one a double with a large en-suite and the other a twin with seperate bathroom and they occupy the ground floor with your own small lounge and kitchenette with tea and coffe making facilities. Breakfast is served in the lounge and Jan offers a complete selection, hot and cold and at a time to suit as we had to be at camp quite early.
There is a railway line at the bottom of the garden but passing trains were not that frequent and did not cause any problems with our sleep!
Just up the road is a very nice restaurant called "Puffin Billy." It is a quality restaurant and the food was excellent. As it was a nice night we sat outside to eat. It is only a ten minute (slow pace) walk down the narrow lanes to the restaurant which is only yards from the outer perimeter of the camp. It was also possible to walk down the side of the estuary and look over the camp and watch the recruits still training at 9.15pm!
You could not ask for more and we will definately be booking in for Passing out parade!

Highly recommend Riverdown - we were given a great welcome, beautifully clean rooms and the bonus of access to a fridge to chill milk or champagne! 5 minutes drive from the Commando Training Centre for Royal Marines Family Days and Passing Out; ideally located if you're a birdwatcher, as it's right on the Exe estuary. Beautiful cooked breakfast. Could not fault Riverdown!
