I chose to stay at this hotel because I managed to get a really good rate online - cheaper than any other comparable in the area so long as I paid in advance, unrefundable. Cool. Done.
I arrived around noon, hoping to drop off my luggage until the 3pm check-in time. Instead of having me wait, the front desk checked me right in without my even asking. That set a really good, positive tone for my stay.
The hotel itself is decidedly "hip" with contemporary art throughout, including an interesting, constantly changing video installation beginning in the lobby and continuing on monitors down my floor's hallway (I imagine this was repeated on all floors). I enjoyed this.
My room was a bit of a surprise in how roomy it was, with a king bed loaded with big pillows that was super comfy to dive into. After one night, though, it was clear the bed was too soft and after two nights, made my back hurt so much I took a morning Pilates class just to walk upright again. Not really, but I did do some Pilates stretching that morning in my room in order to walk upright again - and I prefer a soft sleep over a hard one but DANG!
If you love IKEA then you'll love this place. The decor made the room feel like a dorm room I never thought I'd sleep in again. Atmospherically, it was very cold as opposed to being a nice, comforting place to escape to. The very thin, flat carpeting had significant stains that were sadly the first thing to catch my attention upon entry. I knew I was checking into a "contemporary" space; I just didn't anticipate it being so thoroughly void of any warmth.
The rain shower was really nice and the accompanying toiletries were quite nice, I must say. Otherwise, the bathroom was (I think) a vision of a swimming pool that was even colder than the rest of the room. That said, there was a swimming pool light on the wall in front of the toilet at ankle height that must be the BEST NIGHT LIGHT EVER.
Perhaps it was because my stay was over Sat/Sun, but it did get awfully loud at one point during the night. And early Monday morning, voices in the hallway were surprisingly loud. Not a pleasant way to start the day.
Room service was always very prompt. The problem with room service - as with the mini bar and parking - was how exorbitantly overpriced it was. I travel in comfort fairly regularly and expect to pay a higher price for the benefits of that. However, Chambers, imho, outpriced itself in these areas. I found a local grocer and liquor store and even though I had to leave some purchases unused upon my departure, it was *still* cheaper than making use of their room service/mini bar more than I did. And at $28/day, I'd have appreciated valet hand washing/waxing my car, too.
I dined in the restaurant downstairs once. The glasses on the table had to be changed out as they all were dirty. Fortunately, I noted this before the waiter served me and he went above and beyond to earn his tip in terms of making sure I was satisfied with my experience.
I've struggled writing this, giving 3 or 4 stars. It definitely was not a 5 star experience for me. Had it not been for the excellent customer service, this would have been a very average stay because of the problems with the room, the bed, and the costs of the parking and room service/mini bar. The customer service, though, across the board, was well above par, and Chambers needs to be proud of this.
