Great place to learn about the river. They have informative displays and you"ll also be able to get right up next to the damn overflow. Its a special treat to see the barges go through the lock.

“A lucky find for us”
Reviewed June 20, 2012

We happened upon Lock and Dam #1 when we were biking on the River Road Trail. What started as a quick side trip turned into a very interesting and educational hour. The lock and dam are open to the public and are free. We did not get to see the lock in action but it is still a very impressive area. Water thunders over the dam spillway and black Cormorants dive for food in the frothy water. There are many educational plaques situated throughout the site explaining the history of the lock and dam and how everything works. Before leaving the area, we stopped to talk to some birders with a scope set up on the sidewalk next to the lock. They let us peer through their scope at a pair of nesting Peregrine Falcons in the bridge above the dam. Very interesting, especially when a falcon dove into the air after a hapless little bird. It returned to the nest to the loud, echoing kak-kak-kak of its mate. It was awesome!

View of power plant put in place by Henry Ford to support the plant he constructed in Saint Paul during the 1920's to produce model T's. The plant continued in operation until last year.

This lock was the head of navigation on the Minnissippi until the lock at Saint Anthony Falls was built

“Visitor-friendly Army Corps of Engineers Lock”

Great to experience from a small watercraft--the lock is easily 60 feet high and moves rather quickly. A great experience for the family, open 7 days/week while navigable.
