The Modern had the best pot roast anywhere with creamy garlic mashed potatoes and carrots done to perfection. It was quite literally what made autumn dreams. It was what you craved when the chill hit the air and the blood needed to be thickened. Not to mention the pot roast hash for breakfast. Oh the Modern Cafe...
It is with heavy heart and disbelief that I write this horrible review. Over the past few years, the service and the food has gone down hill. Just last wednesday, I ordered the pot roast with high hopes. The waitress was too busy talking to a co-worker to actually bring it to the table and once she did it was luke warm. The pot roast was smothered in what appeared and tasted like poultry gravy from a jar, the potatoes like something from a box and thank you for putting the Cherynobyl sized piece of celery on my plate with a mini carrot. Needless to say, I quickly paid my bill and left the food barely touched.
This has been the norm for a year with only a smattering of what I would call good meals there. I keep going back hoping for something different, something reminiscent of old times, but maybe it is of a time long passed. You remember, where a waitress/waiter filled your coffee cup when it was empty. Your eggs weren't running and raw looking when you ordered over medium.
The prices are too high for bad services and mediocre food. I will not be returning to the Modern. Maybe a good home-cooked meal will have to be cooked at home in the future.
