For sure a 5 star but lost a star on the staff. Its one for sure one of the best place around for breakfast. Went here straight after finishing Minneapolis marathon. After running 26 miles still had the patience to wait for 45 minutes to get a seat because of the excellent aroma coming out from the kitchen. An it worth the wait!!

Perfect breakfast which in turn turned into brunch. Perfect hashbrowns, perfect poached eggs, yummy pancakes. Staff is a bit curt, but then if u have to work in a real "hole in the wall" like this then u might end up being curt after a few hours of work. The good food substituted irritated staff. :)

Blueberry pancake heaven, have never had better pancakes with ton's of sweet tasty blueberries! Super non stop coffee and a real slice of Americana throughout your meal. Super-Duper!

Landed at MSP airport and needed some breakfast/lunch before hitting the road back to Iowa… using the mobile app, I searched Near Me Now and breakfast… Al's Breakfast popped up. The reviews mentioned it was a small place… there would be a wait.. and the food was worth it. All points were true!

It was below freezing, but I waited in the line outside anyway while the wife and teenage kids sat in the car parked on the street where they could watch my progress. Doesn't that sound like fun?! Finally made it inside the place to discover that line continued on the inside… you basically are waiting behind the people who are seated at the breakfast counter and eating their food. When someone finishes, they clear the spot and fill it with new bodies… if groups are different sizes, they sometimes asks everyone to move down a chair to accommodate… it is all part the small restaurant, fun staff, college campus vibe!

We sampled the following: chocolate chip pancakes, corn beef hash, fancy scrambled eggs, huevos rancheros and hash browns with cheese and onion. It was all very good… with good tunes going and laid back patrons on both sides of us.

If you are in a hurry or claustrophobic, take a pass and hit Potbelly across the street. If you have small kids, this is probably not your spot. If you have the time to wait, are solo or have a small group or are willing to break up to fill chairs and don't mind making some new friends, you really need to try Al's.

We came here on a weekday and it was crowded. Great food (ok, if you are committed to eating healthy all the time, then don't come here), excellent coffee, nice/friendly waitstaff...the pancakes are like a dessert, try one even if just to share with your neighbor. There is nothing bad on the menu. Word has it Dinkytown is on the edge of survival because of over-development - well, let's hope places like this win out and remain as a cultural icon of this fine city.

Everything about this place is unique. My wife and I got there about 10:30 am Sunday. It was packed but we squeezed our way in. She asked if we should stay. I said 'how could we not!' Glad we did. Great food (Jose with a short stack of blueberry pancake). A true experience in sight, sound and taste.
