“very flavorful, very SLOW service sunday eve 01/13”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

if you have the time, the food was delicious. Sunday night arrived@615p. Perhaps 1/4 occupance..maybe less, hard to tell from the layout. Waited more than 20 min for just water and drinks menu. (took even longer, and then asking to acquire the food menu!) Once we ordered our meal (skipping appetizers for fear of lengthening the wait) we had our dishes served perhaps 20 minutes or so later. Well balanced flavors for my taste with the pleasant absence of overly salted quality. We quite enjoyed the Kadai Mushroom and Navarathan Korma along with an order of Paratha. I will happily return when I don't mind waiting. Polite staff, ok ambience (classical music was pleasant). Portions not large but fair for the price?

“Gourmet Indian Food Downtown”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

Located in the venerable old Lumber Exchange on 5th & Hennepin the Copper Pot doesn't have upscale decor , but everything else makes it a fine cafe. From the scent of exotic spices when you walk in the door, to the friendly hostess/server, it all adds up to a promise of a great dining experience-which it was. Nothing tacky about the cafe except perhaps for the unnecessary TV- no sound though.

Dear husband dislikes curry and Indian fare is probably his least favorite - but he wants to return soon. He enjoyed the chicken Korma smothered in a cardamon cream sauce and I really liked the Dum Puck, a lamb tenderloin stew in a red chili-cumin sauce. The Naan is the best I've had ever - and the riata sauce quite tasty. The time it took to prepare the food was reassuring that everything was prepared fresh. If you've ever heard the dreaded ding of the microwave, you know what I mean. I can't wait to return for lunch and do the buffet so as to sample even more of this delicious food. Watch the bill though - the man at the bar rang up an extra beer and hot tea, easy to catch with only two people- but groups be careful.

“Great Food, If You Can Stand The Wait”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

This restaurant is a true "back of house, front of house" saga.

Summary: We had two hours to eat before we needed to be 5 blocks away....we made it with 2 minutes to spare.

As far as I could tell, they had 3 servers -- only one of which was allowed to take orders, and even worse, do the bartending. This perhaps would work if "bartending" entailed simply pulling the corks on wine and/or pulling off bottle caps for beers -- but they have a significant list of house cocktails. Each time someone orders a cocktail this guy is probably tied up for 8 minutes...during which nothing happens. Rinse. Repeat. That being said the busboy & girl were very friendly and apologetic for the delays...this is mostly a management issue, not staff failing at their jobs. They had a full house (Friday night, 6 - 8PM) - why not staff for success?

But to concentrate on the food, if you can stand the wait - and I mean WAIT, I would say of our 2h there we talled a total of 45 minutes just sitting there waiting for ordering or billing, the food almost makes up for it. Whoever they got back there turn out plates is a magician.

Must Have
-----------------
+ Regular Naan (bread)

Very Good
------------------
+ Hyderabadi Cocktail
+ [Gobi] Manchurian (appy)
+ Dum Puck (lamb curry entree)
+ Onion Cheddar Kulcha (bread)
+ Rice (with entrees) -- perfectly cooked
+ Mao ___ Cocktail -- another friend had this, and loved it, can't remember full name
+ ____ ____ Cocktail -- another friend had this, and seconds of it, can't remember name...but anyhow, we were 4 for 4 on cocktails - so I would say, order without fear.

Good
---------
+ Pakora -- ever-so-slightly overcooked but still good
+ Tamarind Tango Cocktail
+ Dahiwala Murgh (Chicken entree)

So, in closing, I would recommend this place - for dinner, lunch buffet might be the perfect solution - but only if you have twice as much time as you think you need.

“Dirty Dishes and Poor Service”
Reviewed December 25, 2012

A party of ten people and I dined here on Christmas Eve and were very disappointed with this restaurant. The flavors and dishes were wonderful, but for their prices they were seriously deficient in four areas: 1) Service was amazingly slow. We noticed that others arriving after us were served before us and it took one and a half hours before our dinner was served. 2) When the dinner plates were laid on the table, we noticed that there was a thin layer of grease and small bits of food on them. We asked for a new set, and a third set, but they were just as dirty. Finally we just wiped off the grease with our napkins. They need to fix their dishwasher and hope the health department does not shut them down. 3) We ordered some food mild, and some spicy hot. The hot dishes were nuclear hot; so hot they were not palatable. They need to carefully ask for what spice level is desired and provide the heat level requested. 4) We had made a reservation, but when we arrived they had no clue, our table was not ready, and we sat right next to the door where there was a huge gust of cold air, every time someone came in.
