Owner description: The Museum of Russian Art is the only museum in North America devoted to preserving and presenting all forms of Russian art and artifacts. Housed in a beautifully renovated historic building, the Museum’s multi-level galleries provide a tranquil and intimate setting for TMORA’s exhibitions and educational events. Now on view: Women in Soviet Art: focusing on the representation and self-representation of women in Soviet art, this exhibition explores the roles and perspectives of women under the Soviet system from the 1950s–1980s.Jewish Life in the Russian Empire: Exhibited for the first time in 1867 at the seminal ethnographic exhibit in Moscow, the photographs depict a unique record of Jewish life in Tsarist Russia. It tells the story of Jewish communities within the Pale of Settlement, a region where permanent residency of Jewish peoples was allowed. Jewish Life in the Russian Empire will be on display in the lower gallery.

A former church building has been remodeled to house this art museum in a creative, expansive way. The displays change theme, artist, time period about 4 times a year, always highlighting aspects of Russian art. This is the only (!) Russian art museum in the USA. Well worth a couple hours of learning about the Russian culture thru the art. Easy access off 35W in S. Mpls, good parking across the street (free), a nice but pricy gift shop.

If you are the kind of person who goes to Courtauld every time you go to London, you will understand the reason to go to this museum on multiple occasions. The exhibitions are vibrant and different from the usual art museum; showing another view of the world. And the Twin Cities. There are three levels with a gorgeous atrium, nice gift shop (although I vaguely remember this gift shop at the MOA), and changing exhibits in a unique building. Exit 35W at Diamond Lake Road, head west a few feet and park on the street. Easy as that. There is an admission fee that helps support the museum. For the people who want to view free art, I suggest the poster store at the Mall. There are plenty of nearby restaurants that make this a nice half day outing. Personally I'd go north on Nicollet, west on 38th St to Victors 1959 Cafe.

Kids get in free which was awesome! We have a soft spot in our hearts for Russia so we truly enjoyed the history lessons for the older art. The modern art was also interesting. For a smaller museum we thought it was great and the staff seemed very friendly. Will definitely recommend to friends and family. My husband would have liked more explanation behind the more modern pieces but I thought it was perfect.
Enjoyed this so much more than the Walker Art Center, which is full of abstract art. Blech. This had REAL art that you could tell what it was and had true purpose and meaning behind many of the pieces. The building itself was beautiful and fun too.
Another plus is the free parking :)

I have been to this museum several times since I was introduced to it. Here's what I like about it:
1. It is small enough to spend time reading about each piece etc. and still be done with the whole museum in 2 hours. Sometimes the MIA is overwhelming and you get exhausted just thinking about going there.
2. Every painting is a piece you've never seen before. The quality of the paintings is amazing. If these artists had lived in other parts of Europe you would have seen these paintings in art books for sure. Fun to discover a completely new painting.
3. The church it is housed in is a great building. I love that you can see from the 2nd floor to the 1st floor. It allows for you to view the paintings from many different vantage points.
4. They have a great little gift shop.

Also, be sure to go down the street and have lunch or at least frozen custard at Wise Acres. That makes for the perfect afternoon out!

This museum is an enchanting place. Although I'm no expert on Russia, the art seemed so very Russian to me: rich colors, lots of depth. The gift shop is wonderful. I especially enjoyed the exhibit on the Old Believers. I learned so much!
