I dined here a couple of times on a recent visit to Minneapolis, opting for steak the first occasion, and sushi the second. The steaks are great value, priced very keenly for the cuts available. My steak was accurately cooked (requested black and blue) and quite tasty. Not the best, but not the worst.

A couple of days later I had sushi, which is the other speciality of the restaurant. The range of sushi options is fairly bewildering (but in a good way!) so I opted for one of the chef's recommendation plates. The fish tasted amazingly fresh, and was beautifully laid out on the plate. It was served with an interesting salad, and a bowl of deeply flavoured miso soup on the side.

If you're visiting Rare, I'd recommend going for the sushi ahead of the steak.

Long waits and bad food is what you are in for if you dine at Rare. The sushi was fine but we had to wait a long time for it. The steaks on the other hand were so over cooked they were ruined and the gratin was reheated and tasted terrible. It tasted like something my grandmother (who was a horrible cook) might have served. We had a group of 6 people and our dinner (appetizers and entrees only) took over 3 hours. Our server would check in about every 20 minutes to half an hour. Honestly, stay away.

We visited Rare after arriving at the Grand Hotel for a quick weekend away. We arrived around 9 pm, and as we were hungry and looking for dinner, went to the restaurant in the hotel. We stood in the doorway for several minutes while servers hustled around the bar, none acknowledging us. When finally 3 couples arrived alongside us, a very hurried server informed us at least 3 times that the kitchen closes at 10 pm (it was 9:20). We thanked them for informing us, asked if we were ok to order dinner, and again were informed that the kitchen closes at 10 pm. Finally, someone was able to communicate that yes, we could order dinner, but that the kitchen closes at 10 pm. If we would have had the energy to go somewhere else after a long drive to get to the hotel, we certainly would have--I'm not sure how they could have been less welcoming. When we finally sat down, we found the steaks and sides to be quite good. Nothing special, but certainly acceptable and cooked to the proper temperature. Drinks were ok. Server was more polite once we actually were seated, but still was very rushed. In an economy where businesses claim to be struggling, I would expect that this one would try to make guests feel a little more welcome. I doubt we'll be back.

Had a wounderful dinner with the family. Great choices for Sushi and it is prepared fresh. Also good choices for steaks and Sea Bass. You cannot go wrong with any of the choices and very reasonable for this level of dining.

Sunday night is all you can eat sushi night, but we opted for the 28oz ribeye which we shared. It was the best steak we've had and at $24 a real bargain.

It's too bad that the restaurant is buried on the 2nd floor and not visable from the street. It's a hidden gem.
