It's not the best fish and chips you'll ever have but it is reliably good and served in hefty portions. This is a great option to satisfy fish and chips cravings w a lovely Guinness. I haven't ever tried anything else here.

Tiny little place, it's long, skinny and red ~ with a tin ceiling, painted gold. The building is a hundred years old and it doesn't look like much has changed. It's noisy, and crowded, and lively.

The bar is limited to beer & wine. The menu has about a dozen items. Do not let that stop you. They focus on a handful of items and do them well.

The fish & chips is fresh, firm, slightly unctuous and coated in a light, crispy batter. The cheeseburger is grassfed beef, Irish cheddar and crisp lettuce, pickles & onion (with an unfortunate out of season tomato) on a buttered, toasted bun. Both dishes were properly prepared, served immediately and portioned generously.

Service is friendly and the prices are fair. This little neighborhood joint is definitely worth a visit. But be prepared to wait for a table, the neighborhood has noticed it.

Anchor Fish & Chips probably does not need another review, but here is mine—old, long, dark room with deep red walls and a red velvety curtain and high, golden tin ceilings from the XIX century. The crowd is hippish—mostly neighborhood folks with no Calhoun Square yapidy yuppidy. Oldies from the sixties and seventies playing in the background—The Supremes, Sinatra, Bob Dylan... No plasma TVs (thank you, thank you!). Down to earth waitresses who know their job. Lobster soup could have been creamier but it was ok. The famous fish & chips were a bit greasy but also ok.

All in all, I'd say average good with great atmosphere.

Beieve it or not, I had no idea that this was an Irish place. I had only heard about the fish and chips, so I was floored and delighted to have Irish breakfast when I stopped by for the first time. The place was not crowded and the food came out pretty quickly. It's been YEARS since I've had a proper breakfast with beans and a grilled tomato and I was not disappointed. I'd love to come back and try the fish-n-chips, but I'll wager that I'll be back for breakfast first!!

The Anchor is always packed. On a weekend, get there by five. The waiting area is a bit, umm, friendly. But the tables turn over pretty quickly.
The fish and chips is the best I have ever had, and I'm from New England. We split an order, with mushy peas and cole slaw, and it's plenty. The beer is either Irish or local craft. The staff is pleasant and killer efficient.
