Owner description: THE GUTHRIE THEATER is an American center for theater performance, production, education and professional training, known for its dynamic productions of classic and contemporary plays. Open to the public year-round, this award-winning cultural destination houses three theaters, dramatic public spaces and distinctive dining. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, the Guthrie is located in the historic Mill District of Downtown Minneapolis and features a 175-foot cantilever bridge which overlooks the Mississippi River. When it opened in 2006 Time magazine called the building "a 21st century dream factory." Visit the Guthrie to see a show, grab a cup of coffee and explore the building, shop at the Guthrie Store, or to simply take in the extraordinary riverfront views. Backstage tours are Friday and Saturday mornings.

Arthur Miller's proving ground, need I say more. Great restaraunts in the building and within walking distance. Some performances are superior to New York renditions.

“Great theater”
Reviewed November 28, 2013

The productions at the Guthrie are always top notch. W have season tickets so we see many of the productions and always enjoy the fine acting and staging.
The McGuire theatre has very un comfortable seating so we like to avoid it but is impossible if we want to see good plays.
the food on Level 5 is mediocre at best but Sea Change has lovely food, bit on pricey side.

“Not just for theater!”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

The Guthrie Theater is a gorgeous building right on the Mississippi! It is a lovely venue to attend theater. There are 3 theaters in the building, a thrust stage where currently "A Christmas Carol" is being performed, a classic theater and a small black box theater. I've been to performances in all 3 spaces and they are all lovely settings. The black box theater, on the 9th floor is a surprise in that it has no reserved seats (at least for all the performances I've been to) but you can buy a ticket ahead of time and a half hour ahead of the performance stand in line to get your seat. At intermission you'll be amazed at the fantastic view of the river. Floor to ceiling windows show off the Mississippi in all its glory.

The building itself can be visited without attending a show and there are bars outside the theaters (handy for intermission if at a show) so it can be a cheap date night to go and visit the "bridge to nowhere" -- a skywalk on the 5th floor that opens onto a beautiful outside deck with benches to sit and enjoy the river scenery. When a shows are going on the deck is almost empty but watch out for intermission as it will quickly get packed! On the main floor is the restaurant Sea Change which is great for a gourmet meal but my husband and I like to sit at the bar and have small plates before a show--nice happy hour prices during the week until 6:00.

Don't miss this attraction if visiting Minneapolis and if you live here be sure to visit it!

“Best theater outside of NYC”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

The plays and artists at the Guthrie are very talented, and often there are players for NYC or the plays debut in Minneapolis at the Guthrie and then go on to Broadway. The setting is intimate, and the acoustics are great.
