Owner description: THE GUTHRIE THEATER is an American center for theater performance, production, education and professional training, known for its dynamic productions of classic and contemporary plays. Open to the public year-round, this award-winning cultural destination houses three theaters, dramatic public spaces and distinctive dining. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, the Guthrie is located in the historic Mill District of Downtown Minneapolis and features a 175-foot cantilever bridge which overlooks the Mississippi River. When it opened in 2006 Time magazine called the building "a 21st century dream factory." Visit the Guthrie to see a show, grab a cup of coffee and explore the building, shop at the Guthrie Store, or to simply take in the extraordinary riverfront views. Backstage tours are Friday and Saturday mornings.

My first trip to the Guthrie was to see comedian Paula Poundstone (she's wonderful by the way). The parking was easy and close. the building is just beautiful. I love those projected pictures and mirrors on the escalator walls. The windows on all levels look out over the best views of downtown Minneapolis.
The show was in the Wurtele Thrust theater. The stage was up close to all the visitors, the lighting and sound was perfect.
I'm planning to go back to see a play or two or three.

The new Guthrie building is often called Best Buy or IKEA on the river. It looks like wither one. It has some nice views of the river and the historic St. Anthony main. The Guthrie shows are known for good production so they cost quite a bit to attend. The problem is that you have to be in luck to find a show you like. In nay event, if you are in Minneapolis and even if you don't like any plays that are being offered, you can still visit the building and enjoy the view of the mighty Mississippi. There is no fee to get in.
DON'T EAT at their restaurant. It's tasty but it's also outrageously expensive. There are several smaller restaurants across the street that offer cheaper and very nice food.

I love the Guthrie. I take all out of town visitors here. You could start your Guthrie experience by viewing this architectural wonder as you stroll across the Stone Arch bridge from the other side of the Mississippi. (Lots of restaurants in that area). As you get closer to this midnight blue wonder, see how many of the eight larger than life faces on the outside of the building you can recognize. (Tennessee Williams is one....identify the rest before your visit and dazzle your companions with your brilliance.) When you enter the building, venture up the impressive escalator to the endless bridge. If you're attending a play (and you should) come early so that you can grab a drink and sit on the endless bridge to take in the river view and hopefully a gorgeous night. As you walk the many corridors, observe the ghostly murals on the walls. There are lots of photos of prior plays...you could look for "George" from ER! First one who finds him gets a prize. All this and I haven't said anything about the performances...brilliant,
well staged theatrical experiences. It's a must see for Minneapolis. Should be top of the list.

I enjoy attending the Guthrie. Although I'm not usually a big fan of modern architecture-- this building is really cool. It has the best views of the Mississippi in Minneapolis. There is a great walking tour you can take with an ipod.
We have always enjoyed their first rate performances.
