Owner description: THE GUTHRIE THEATER is an American center for theater performance, production, education and professional training, known for its dynamic productions of classic and contemporary plays. Open to the public year-round, this award-winning cultural destination houses three theaters, dramatic public spaces and distinctive dining. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, the Guthrie is located in the historic Mill District of Downtown Minneapolis and features a 175-foot cantilever bridge which overlooks the Mississippi River. When it opened in 2006 Time magazine called the building "a 21st century dream factory." Visit the Guthrie to see a show, grab a cup of coffee and explore the building, shop at the Guthrie Store, or to simply take in the extraordinary riverfront views. Backstage tours are Friday and Saturday mornings.

“You don't need theater tickets to enjoy the building.”

We walked along the river one afternoon with the intent to see the building based solely on the modern architecture. When we got there, we were surprised that it was opened.
While in the lobby, my son noticed the really long escalator. For us, that's a good enough reason to explore further. The escalator takes you up to the fantastic cantilevered upper floor.
Cool space.

“Saved by a View of the River”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2013

An escalator within a maze with a nice view of the Stone Arch Bridge and the Mississippi River. If you walk outside, the view is great. If you look thru the side windows, they are too small. The decor is cold, the people are gray, but then, hey, it's Minnesota. If you are expecting classic architecture, try New York, San Francisco, or Europe. If you want to ride up an escalator - like you were going to shop at the old Dayton's, and try to figure out where you are going with the poor signage, then you won't be disappointed. Both the restrooms and elevators are too small. As people have pointed out, it has a great view, but only from the inside out. The theaters themselves are fine, the seats could be more comfortable. The information lady was helpful. BTW, you don't have to buy a ticket to anything to enjoy the view. Go on Sunday afternoon when you can park on the street for free. It's a place to see a play, but not a total experience.

to survive all these years in an artistic venue such as Minneapolis is a tribute to the Guthrie. The plays are first rate,Actors from all around the globe perform here. The new building is second to none and the house is usually packed. The place in the Midwest for outstanding theater.

“The Guthrie is a gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2013 via mobile

We recently saw the drama "Other Desert Cities", and what a fantastic play (as usual for the Guthrie). Set design, actors, the music, everything was just perfect. The Guthrie itself is like being inside a work of art; so enjoyable to look out the windows to the Stone Arch Bridge & the river.

Every production at the Guthrie Theater is a masterpiece in terms of the acting and set design. Plus, the building is a modern marvel providing picturesque views of the Mississippi River and Stone Arch Bridge.
