My husband and I decided to spend a rainy day at the museum, and we were very disappointed. There were so many closed exhibits. It was frustrating to spend so much on admission and only enjoy about half of the museum's gallery spaces. Not only were they between traveling exhibits, but some of their permanent exhibits were also closed. I would make sure to attend on a day where you can enjoy the sculpture garden and the traveling exhibit space is open. Also, come on a free day, as this museum seems much larger than it actually is. Also note, parking is not free, so plan to spend a fair amount just getting in the door.

The day I visited the Walker the only gallery open was the non-permanent Edward Hopper exhibit. The cost to get in was $14 so that is something to consider. They were giving out free passes that would start on the next Sunday, but I was in Minneapolis on business and would not be able to take advantage of that. They gave me a pass that would be good forever, so I just need to put it someplace I can find it if I go back! The Hopper exhibit was actually worth paying to see. The gift store is nice with some really expensive pieces.

This was strange: we visited the Walker Art Center on a Thursday afternoon and *after* we bought our tickets were told that the entire museum was shut down with the exception of the Edward Hopper exhibit! Then we were handed two tickets for free admission in August (but we are from out of town, so what good are those tickets to us?) At this point – and looking into our dismayed faces – we were offered a refund. We elected to stay for Hopper and to view the sculpture garden. Given what we saw, we’re happy that we did. But… really?

Contemporary art at its best is what you will find in the Walker. Some of the exhibits will leave you befuddled; others will entrance you. Bored you will not be. Once every year, the Walker features the British Arrow Awards films, a look at the best and most artistic of British advertisements. Make sure you get your ticket in advance, because it always sells out.

The museum is extremely friendly to disabled visitors. The outside sculpture museum, featuring a large spoon with a cherry on top, is also worth seeing.

Spending the afternoon on a MN summer day down at the Walker Art Center is a must at some point in your life. Walking through the dozens of galleries and being a part of the exhibits allows you to share in the vision of each artist. It is ever changing, so keep that in mind during your planned visit. For a decent admission price, you're able to enjoy everything they have to offer. There is also on property underground parking which makes it even that much more enjoyable.

Walking the grounds is the best part. Make sure you're there when everything is in full bloom. It's well worth the time in the summer to spend out taking in all of the sculptures and gardens. The food is a little over priced, however not so much for the area. Make a plan to enjoy lunch at one of the surroundings little cafes in the area.
