The Walker Art Center, especially on Target Free Thursdays, is a fantastic date spot within the Minneapolis area.

I especially recommend the bar / restaurant called "Gather" as they have terrific half-priced apps.

Thank Cody N

Mall of America represents one of the best portraits of today's consumerists America. It's not a coincidence that it's located in Minnesota. Walker art Center is another extension of ills of the society but this time it all revolves around the rich who are for the most part the patrons of this institutions. The Walker does have some OK art but for the most part it pales in comparison to its counterparts from New York or Chicago, for example. Since Minnesota doesn't have anything else remotely similar to a modern art institution the Walker comes off as an easy winner. Its permanent collection is rather boring, however, and the conceptual art and intermediate art pieces are sort of lost in time and place. The Walker has been trying to reinvent itself but so far it has managed to become even more snobbish.
If you are not wealthy and not invited t one of the gala events that Walker organizes much of the "coll stuff" will be off limits to you. Otherwise, you're required to pay very expensive tickets just to see another artist sponsored by Target Corporation. Yes, the Walker has become a "cultural" extension or a vehicle for self-promotion by several large Twin Cities corporations such as Target and Medtronic.
There are some cool things. The new building is "interesting" in terms of design and the sculpture garden is "nice" when the weather is nice. Gift shop is just about the only place in Minneapolis where you can find cool, little, overpriced trinkets. Don't buy books there since you'll always find them cheaper on-line. Don't buy food there either. It's just too expensive.
So it pretty much boils down to the sculpture garden, which can be used for less than six months of the year (the rest of the year it's covered in snow).

I think this would be a great place to see if they didn't have almost all their galleries closed at the same time for installations. We did get to see three installations and the abstract art gallery (which is very small). Most of what we did see was wonderful, but I feel like we missed a lot of amazing art. The Art Center is across the street from the Sculture Garden, which is worth the trip for that alone. Tours of the Sculpture Garden are run from the Art Center periodically, and both the Art Center and the Sculpture Garden are free. It's a nice way to spend a day, but I would call ahead and see what's open before heading out to spend the day at the Art Center.

There always are multiple exhibitions going on at the Walker Center - so much to see. Going thru the sculpture park is a prue joy. One note, there is much renovation going on right now so check before you go to see what is open.
