I love the sake at moto-i. I've traveled to Japan on several occasions, and in my opinion, the sake is very comparable to what is brewed at moto-i. Where else can you get fresh brewed sake in Minnesota, let alone the entire United States?

The concept is very original, great design - fun rooftop bar, several floors of bar/lounge area. The food is only okay, but remember that they are not specializing in Japanese food like Masu Sushi and Robata - this is primarily a sake bar! My friends and I always enjoy meeting here for a few, if not several, drinks. Much more interesting that the usual uptown bar!

On a recent Friday evening we grabbed a seat on the rooftop patio. Great view of downtown Minneapolis as the evening turned to night. We had a full sampling of food and drinks including a couple of kinds of sake, a couple of sake based cocktails--the Japanhattan was exceptionally good. In the food department we tried green chicken curry dumplings (very good), abura ramen (excellent), bulgogi sliders (very good) and hoisin pork buns (good). Service was very prompt given the mob scene on the roof. We definitely go again.

moto-i is a charming branch off of the Herkimer, a staple Uptown pub. moto's owners spent time in Japan mastering the art of brewing sake to open one of the first (definitely a MN first) breweries in the US. The atmosphere is chic Uptown, with dim lighting and bold colors. You can tell the decor was done with great intent. The menu is asian fusion, with staples such as fried rice and udon as well as your more exotic dishes. The sake is tasty. I suggest trying a flight (or two.) The unfiltered sake is my personal favorite. It is a decent value as well. Take a date and enjoy the rooftop patio.

This is the tale of two establishments. Had I stayed in the bar Moto-i might have gotten a 4 or 5. The house made saki, the saki cocktails, and the local brews make for an interesting and delicious bar menu. The spicy nuts are addictive. The bartender was attentive and made excellent recommendations. Hitting the bar here is a must.

And then, we were seated for dinner. Our server was scatterbrained, kept coming to the table to answer questions and then running away as we were giving our order. The appetizers were okay; the wings a bit too sweet, the meatballs dry, the sweet potato fries underdone. Our main courses were awful; burnt fried rice and ramen with an off-taste. We were so disappointed at the change in dynamic, service, and quality that happened between "the front of the house" and "the back of the house." With so many good, authentic Asian restaurants in Minneapolis the only redeeming thing here is the Saki bar and the rooftop.

This is our new favorite Japanese restaurant because of the unusual offerings. Get the cabbage pancake and the mushroom buns, you won't regret it.
