“Great Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2011

I have stayed here twice now on business. I really like this hotel. I have stayed in many hotels in Minneapolis. The Graves, Marriott, Westin etc. This may be my favorite.
As a Marriott Rewards member I love the fact that I still get Marriott points for staying here.
However, this hotel does not feel like a Marriott. It feels like a boutique hotel.
As others have mentioned it is about two blocks from the Light Rail Government Plaza Station. This is simple to access from the airport and a great way to get to downtown Minneapolis.
Pros:
Marriott Property
Close to light rail
Good location, close to Hennepin and city center
Friendly service
Comfortable rooms and beds
Cons:
None to report

This hotel was beautiful but you never saw the staff. The woman at check in was very friendly, fast & efficient but other than her, we never saw any hotel staff. The place is very clean and well decorated but not very homey. We had friends visit from another hotel and there was no place in the lobby area to really sit and visit. Beds were very comfortable and large wall mounted tv was a plus.

I stayed in this hotel for five nights to attend a conference. This hotel is located right in the heart of downtown. Located close to Light rail Nicolet mall station. So it was very easy to get to and fro from Minneapolis airport.
Room was clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly. Internet was free in the lobby and they provide desktop computes for customers and printer access which came handy for making last minute changes in my power point presentation.
I highly recommend this hotel.

Surprisingly warm and personable service for such a stylish place.
Have you ever been to a 4-star with a boutique feel, the most fashionable Euro-decor ... and cold-fish reception? The sort of hotel where a guest gets the sense of being tolerated but not welcome.
The good news here: You get all of the elegance, but none of that impersonal or outright cold attitude. Instead, the front desk staff is gracious and cheerful, and the amenities - even for folks who arrive with bargain-rate reservations - are superb.
This is a century-old converted bank/office building, and the designers retained the coolest elements of the original lobby: Old-fashioned office-style elevator banks that look like a scene from a 1940s movie, a marble stairway and more.
The decor approach is along the lines of the Kimpton chain, with a touch of Hyatt Place.
The renovation is 3 years old and holding up well. Perhaps a scratch here or a dent there, but nothing significant. Overall, the sense of old-style architecture is intact, at least in corner rooms: The ceiling in room 712 must be 12 feet high.
Understated but enchanting lobby, spacious and tasteful room, terrific staff, an atmosphere of elegance, a splendid location, good fitness center.
Downside: No pool or hot tub (the latter ought to be mandatory in Minneapolis, which like Montreal and Chicago can be achingly cold even in October). The beddiing is plush but Id' give the mattress a 3 on a range of 1 to 5.

Tip 1: If you've joined Marriott's loyalty program when you book, you get free Internet and other perks.
Tip 2: This is maybe a block from the Government Place stop on the light rail line. Public transit in this city is extensive and good. So perhaps skip renting a car (taxes are car rentals are extraordinary, and downtown parking is ferociously expensive)... or if you're in town for a long stay, just rent one for the day you actually need it. (You can catch the light rail to MSP to pick up and drop off the rental; rates at the airport are a lot lower than at downtown locations).
Tip 3: Take enough time to explore the lobby and soak in the atmosphere. If you let your imagination go, there are sections of the ultra-modern downtown where you can still see enough retro signs and original architecture that you get a sense of what it might've been like 60 or 70 years ago ... and the Hotel Minneapolis is one of those places. It's more than just a hotel, so be sure to enjoy that aspect.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are a premiums, but it can't hurt to ask - if occupancy is low and your luck is goo...

On arrival, the entire hotel lobby was mobbed by a wedding reception. This was not overspill from an event in a ballroom - the hotel lobby itself was being used for the reception. I literally had to push my way through a crowd of wedding guests to get to the front desk. This was by far THE most unpleasant hotel arrival experience I have ever had. It did not get any better. The first room I was given looked onto an interior courtroom and smelled strongly of burnt something. I asked to move to another room. I was given a tiny room that at least looked out on the street but was so small there was not even room for a chair. Even in Manhattan, this room would have been unacceptably small. I was told there were no other rooms available. The room's furnishings were spare to the point of barren. The overall feel of the hotel - public spaces and rooms alike - was cheap and sterile. It was all too depressing, and I left after about an hour. They charged me for full night. Based on my experience, I question this hotel's numerous positive reviews and high TA rating.

Very good location in heart of downtown, walking distance to Nicollette Mall, performing arts center, shops and restaurants. We stayed on an upper floor that faced the street, and there were no noise problems at night. The inside of the hotel and rooms are very sleek and contemporary, but I think really suffered from putting looks over functionality. The knob to turn on the shower and the shower door were positioned so that there was no way to turn on the shower without getting sprayed with cold water. The smoke alarm was placed on the wall directly facing the bed with a bright blinking green light that glared in my face all night as I was trying to sleep. Also, the room rates aren’t all that cheap, but they still nickel and dime you by charging extra for parking AND charging for wireless! However, the valet staff was extremely friendly and helpful, so they get one star back for that.
