Owner description: A 13-mile bike trail going from Mankato to Rapidan.

. . .you deserve a stop at the Dam Store. It's only a couple of miles to the west of the town of Rapidan and on the west side of the dam.

You'll think it's a bait shop and if it's busy you may have to wait for a place to sit or take your order outdoors. But if you miss it you'll be missing one of the best pieces of pie in MN.

They make a mean thick chocolate malt and a decent, old-fashioned hamburger and potato salad as well.

My husband and I walk about 3 miles a day and do various "legs" of the trail. We have seen many deer and a variety of birds and depending on which leg of the trail, many people. The part closest to Mankato's YMCA is usually busy with dog-walkers and people with strollers but the further away you get, the less crowded. It is beautiful each season and a nice place to walk and reflect on "whatever".

My son loved to go here with his Grandma who lives in Mankato. He thinks the Red Jacket Bridge is the coolest !!!

Start near Mount Kato - there is a little park and parking where you can leave your car - and continue out to the Trestle or keep going to Rapidan Dam (for the great pie!). Not a tough ride or walk/run, plenty of shade and gorgeous trees and views. Take the lower route down to the river by the trestle to wade in the water or enjoy a picnic. You can cross the river up on the trestle or down by the park - I recommend taking one route on the way out and the other on the way back so you see it all. A favorite place for us to bring friends and relatives when they visit - and a regular ride for my husband and I.
