Royal Myconian Resort & Thalasso Spa Center
Ranked #5 of 7 Hotels in Elia
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 26, 2011

The hotel is set in a stunning location on the island of Mykonos.
The accommodation is spacious and clean.
That's about it, the staff was not very friendly, apart from the reception staff and the lobby bar tender.
One of the waitresses/supervisors responsible for seating people at breakfast was very rude; there seemed to be a problem with window tables which overlooked the bay. More often than not they appeared to be allocated for what can only be described as the "favourite guests". This happened several times giving certain people preferential treatment.
The breakfast was less than expected for a 5* hotel, the fruit they provided was mainly out of a tin, apart from a few apples, nectarines & plums which were of very poor quality. The coffee was invariably tepid and not particularly fresh as was the tea. Some of the crockery seemed to be chipped, not something that is acceptable at a 5* resort! The sugar pot was often replenished after we were seated, which surely should have been done prior to being shown to the table.
The pool area was very appealing allowing reasonable space between the sun beds, unlike the beach area, which catered for 2 hotels, It was packed in like sardines and didn’t give any space or privacy, which is expected on a 'private beach'. To obtain beach towels, you had to collect them from the spa rather than from the pool area. Couldn't quite see the logic in that!
Although the thalasso pool was of a reasonable size, it was far too salty and many people found that a little difficult as it stung the eyes too much. This was its only downfall.
The food and drinks were very over priced; it was 80 Euros+ for 2 mains and 2 deserts. There is free transportation into the town of Mykonos throughout the day and night, which was a saviour as it cost far less to eat there than at the hotel. I can't quite understand why they would encourage people to dine out of the hotel (not a good marketing tool) and accommodate the free transportation. Surely any manager of a 5* hotel would try and make it more realistic so that more people would want to eat there. We used room service only once as a drink of sprite was 4 Euros and an unbelievable 6 Euros for room service!
The air-conseemed to be controlled remotely and was turned right down in the evening. They provided a turn down service, and at times it was turned off completely. It became such a problem, that the only alternative was to hide the remote control, thus allowing a cool room upon our return! An extreme length to have to go to!
Overall, I struggle to comprehend that this hotel is in the bracket of one of the 'leading hotels of the world' I have stayed at better 3* hotels than this. The hotel needs to dramatically improve on its attention to detail; simple things like complimentary bottles of water in the rooms upon arrival and replenished throughout the stay, crockery free of chips and stains, improvement on staff attitude, free WI-FI, food and drinks costs need to be more realistic, and less salt in the swimming pool.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a sea view!

I think this may have been the worst resort experience of my life.

We actually booked the Myconian Ambassador Resort, on the basis of its location and fabulous ratings. When we arrived we were greeted by the hotel manager and given detailed information on the island for 45 minutes. We had our heart set of some island hopping and discussed this with the manager who told us it would be around Euro4000. Then he told us maybe we could find a solution for around Euro1000!!! Which seemed crazy! We later found out that there were options from Euro 20!!!

We then told them that we were quite tired as we had been travelling since 7 am and it was now 7pm, so could we please go to our room. I’m not sure what happened next, but a few minutes later the “hotel owner” came out of nowhere and told us they wanted to upgrade us to their other resort which was only a few minutes away. We were very hesitant but it was forced upon us and we felt like we had no other option than to agree. We later found out this had happened to many other groups. This left a really bad taste in my mouth and made me uncomfortable.

The other hotel, Royal Myconian Resort was a 30 minute drive in to the town centre and was literally in the middle of nowhere. The courtesy bus didn’t give us enough flexibility in getting around, so we had to hire a car.

While the views and resort itself were lovely, there are a few issues that just do not work. The biggest issue we had was housekeeping. They had no regard for the do not disturb sign. They would literally enter the room at their leisure. After 30 minutes of arriving at the hotel, the housekeeper decided we needed a turn down service. As she walked in she literally took a towel out of my hand then closed all the blinds (even though the sun was yet to go down and the view was beautiful) and proceeded to tear apart the room.

They walked in on us in bed and in the shower on separate occasions. The housekeeping staff would literally wait outside the room until we left to clean up (twice a day) which made us feel uncomfortable. One day, my husband was feeling unwell and wanted to stay in the room. As I went to and from the pool to check on him, the housekeeper literally constantly asked me if she could clean up the room yet and as soon as we left for a moment was in the room. When we returned a few minutes later and said that we wanted to get changed could she come back later, she mouthed off in Greek and gave us a terrible look. While I was having a quick shower, she then returned to the room without knocking... Very unusual and clearly didn't make us feel comfortable.

She would also move our personal items. For example, my bathroom products were never where I left them. My husband would often return to find things inside his suitcase that had been left out... Needless to say, it made us feel very uncomfortable.

By the end of the trip when we didn’t want to clean up the room every time we left, we would leave the do not disturb sign up if we didn’t need new towels or whatever. But they didn’t care. Upon our return the room would still be turned over and all our things moved.

I have never come across anything like it!!

Other items to note:
The reception staff were all fantastic. Especially Michele. We did have a few issues with food service, however upon voicing our concerns, the issues were resolved.
The walk up to the entrance of the hotel from the street/beach is not easy. I am 29 years old and never ever even contemplated walking up. They do have a shuttle from the top to the bottom and back but I don’t like having to wait around all day for courtesy buses. Honestly, even the drive up the steep hill is not easy...

I would never recommended this hotel based on my experience.

The Royal Myconian is an absolutely gorgeous resort in a beautiful location. The views from our private balcony were breathtaking! The rooms are spacious, large enough for our family of four. The service was very good and prompt. The buffet breakfast fabulous. The lunch we had the poolside was excellent. I was not thrilled with the poolside bar, had the worst Pina Colada and Cosmopolitan of my life. Apparently the regular bartender was off!! She was nice enough to replace it with a pleasant strawberry daiquiri!
Our only troubling experience was at check in. The person at the reception asked us where we were from and when we answered New York, his immediate response was that he disliked "Americans". We were a little taken aback by this inappropriate attitude!! Other than that we had a great stay. Highly recommend it! Just avoid the reception and the poolside bar unless you get the right people to serve you!!!

Spent 4 nights here and absolutely loved it. We got a good last minute rate about two weeks before visiting off their website, but even still staying here was a splurge. Though it was expensive, it was worth it. Beautiful views, friendly and helpful staff, very well appointed, great resort facilities. Perfect, quiet location on Elia beach with a free shuttle to Mykonos Town that runs until 1 am for the restaurants, shopping and clubs. In full disclosure, we were upgraded to a suite with our own private deck equipped with a hot tub overlooking the Aegean (Room 554), so my opinion of the place may be slightly enhanced. But based on the resort as a whole, I'm sure standard rooms will do the trick just fine, at the Royal or Imperial. Place is fantastic! My only gripe was that they charge 4 Euro andhour for wireless access; just include it in the room price!

I'd suggest renting a car for a day or two to explore some of the other beaches around the island (Paradise and Super Paradise for partying, Panormos and the other beautiful northern beaches for serenity), dinner at Katarina's in Little Venice and just strolling the streets of Mykonos Town at night.

I stayed here on my honeymoon and the hotel is gorgeous! The grounds and private beach are fantastic, as are the rooms which are big and clean. The morning breakfast buffet was great too. But the rest of the food options on the grounds are limited. Lunch at the pool wasn't very good and the on site formal restaurant for dinner is serviceable but overpriced (and requires a reservation despite being mostly empty). Much of the charm is that the hotel is off the beaten path and a bit far from Hora (about a 20 minute drive). Its very isolated and there is not much near by (meaning that on the beach, you're stuck forking out a lot of money for the mediocre food the lone restaurant on the shore serves). The hotel does have a complimentary shuttle service that goes to Hora every hour (although it ends at midnight) which we found was reliable and on time. Great for a nice relaxing trip.

Make no mistake about it, this is a first class hotel in every respect. Beautiful architecture, nice rooms, good food and high quality service. Free transport to and from Mykonos town, as well as the port and the airport.
There are, however, a few quirks worth to note: If you do not want to stay by the pool but go the beach, the beach is some 300 m downhill, steeply. This is not obvious on the website or other material and all people do not want to have an involuntary workout after every visit to the beach. There are hotel transports, though.
There are really no choices but one for eating dinner, and that is fine dining. Fine dining is OK, but every evening and that does not come cheap! There are a couple of restaurants downhill at the beach, but they have issues of their own. You might consider eating in the town, there are plenty of priceworthy choices. The free transport service schedule accommodates this.

Room Tip: Put at lot more money on the table and you get an even better room than we got!

Due to moving house and other circumstancess this review comes a little late, nevertheless we want it to be known to fellow travellers that this hotel offered great value for money!
My wife and I travelled to Mykonos end September/beginning October 2010 for 10 days. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel and its wonderful facilities etc. We were impressed with the location, room size, nice seaview, and not forgetting an excellent service. Speaking about the seaview from our room on the topfloor, the only negative thing, if you can call it that, are the somewhat unsightly airco-units on the lower roofs, a good idea would be to cover them up with some lattice-work or plants.
The indoor spa looks wonderful, although we didn't use it.
We also like to point out that LEO at the Lobby Desk was remarkably charming and helpful. He surely has a captivating smile and great customer-oriented attitude.
Overall, we can certainly recommend this particular hotel to anyone that wants the best, but doesn't want to pay top price . Everyone involved was very helpful and nothing was too much, they even clean your (sun)-glasses at the pool.
The dining experience was great, not cheap prices and the portions not really generous, but of excellent quality in a beautiful ambience. Breakfast couldn't be better, however it should be mentioned there was a glitch in the shape of a swarm of persistent flies hovering continuously over the great selection of choice of food each morning which CAN be avoided. This should not happen in a 5 star hotel and I hope this unnecesarry glitch has now been taken care of . But, should we come back to Mykomos we would certainly choose this hotel again.
