“Amazing view, good breakfast, bad beds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2013

I'll break down the pros and cons.

Pros:
The AMAZING view of lake Superior
Refrigerator and microwave in the room
The view
Good breakfast in the morning including eggs made by the innkeepers
Friendly staff
Did I mention the view???!!!

Cons:
The beds were uncomfortable, very "springy" but that's just me, I'd rather have a firm mattress
A little isolated, although Grand Marais was about 25 minutes away, if you are looking for a quick dinner out, you won't have many options
Wi-Fi was non-existent. The only time I got any signal was when I was sitting right next to the computer in the lobby area.

Overall, I would stay again. All rooms have either a balcony or patio overlooking lake superior. The water is right below you. Having the microwave and fridge in the room was convenient. The room wasn't very spacious and the issues with the Wi-Fi and very few cable channels was frustrating on rainy days when we had downtime. But overall, a pleasant stay and would consider staying again if in the area.

Room Tip: We stayed in the room 202 which was close to the lobby and jutted out further than most of the other...

When you stop at a local hotel, you're never quite sure what you'll get - but we found that we were very pleased. The room was well sized and well arranged, lighting good, clean, bed comfortable, breakfast area neat and tidy with a good variety of the normally available items (at most motels). And an extra was the view of Lake Superior. Also they're hiker friendly.
Note: though this is listed under Lutsen, technically it's a few miles west in Tofte.

This was my third trip to the North Shore since 2008, and each time I've stayed at the Cliff Dweller. The new owners are just as wonderful as the previous owner, and I didn't want to leave. The room was spotless, the view was breathtaking, and I felt right at home....again. I slept with the balcony doors open to the sound of the waves of Lake Superior. You can not go wrong staying here. :)

Room Tip: If you want the best view, ask for room 202. The balcony juts out the farthest and is almost direct...

I've stayed here off and on through the years with little to recommend. That has all changed with the new owners. My room was lovely and comfortable with a wonderful view of the Big Water. The log style furniture is perfect for the location. My bed was very comfortable and the fridge and microwave very convenient. In the evening and while I slept, I had the sliding door open for the soothing action of the waves just below. Each morning the sunrise would ease into my room over sparkling waters. I even had a bald eagle soar by my patio window my last morning. In the morning I could go down to the very scenic and comfortable morning dining room and have an "extended" continental breakfast with waffles and bagels besides the usual. I always came back to a nicely clean room. The room rate is perfect. The location is very close to Lutsen skiing and centrally located to ALL of the North Shore pleasures. The owners took care of my needs with pleasure. I extended my stay with pleasure and will be back.

We were apprehensive after seeing several bad reviews, but we spent last weekend at this cozy motel and found it to be very nice. The place has been recently remodelled and under new ownership. The room was very clean and comfortable. The view of Lake Superior was worth the trip and the sounds of the waves crashing into the rocks below lulled us to sleep at night. The hotel doesn't offer much in the way of amenities, no pool or hottub and only a few TV channels, but there was wi-fi and the owner said they would have broadband soon. The hotel serves a complimentary continental breakfast, but don't expect a feast. Just waffles, breads, juice and coffee. Overall, we found it a satisfying experience and we will definitely return on our next trip to the North Shore.

Room Tip: Every room has a balcony overlooking the lake.

Great location -- loved listening to the waves crashing on the shore just outside the door, even in the winter. Stayed here while skiing at Lutsen, which is just minutes up the road. Cliff Dweller is by far the most affordable hotel in the area. Room was small but clean and mini-fridge and microwave were nice to have. Continental breakfast is a nice bonus. Will definitely stay here again when we come back to Lutsen next year.

Room Tip: Room on ground floor made loading and unloading of ski gear easy by pulling right up to the door. A...

Just stayed one night. very reasonable price and right on the water. if you want to hear the waves crashing in on the north shore this is your spot. standard motel room but the owners are trying really hard; clean and tidy even for this older property. breakfast was a very pleasant surprise. not sure the lack of coffee maker makes sense but...
