Had a great time. 3 mountains were great. Room was exactly what we wanted. Small kitchenette. Ski in and ski out. Gondola was fun to ride. Rented snowmobiles for a day at Steves. Saw eagles....but no moose. That was the only downfall.

We rented the Superior 3 bedroom town house at Caribou Highlands. It states it sleeps 8-10 but the floor plan is pretty small. Nonetheless, with a group of close friends it was really fun, and about the only option for large accommodation that is ski-in, ski-out. There are a number of hot tubs just a short walk away, unfortunately shared with all the townhouses, but fun to meet other guests. Great place for people of all ages: families but many 25-35 year olds as well. There are near-by snowmobile and cross country ski trails as well that we took advantage of, along with snow boarding. I think a good value for the price ($1300 for 3 nights over MLK weekend).
Pros: ski-in ski-out, deck, wood burning fireplace with plenty of fire wood, great customer service. You can check out board games from the front desk, and they'll even deliver them to your room. There's a locker for skis/snowboards right outside your front door so you don't have to bring snowy gear inside.
Cons: small floor plan, no private hot tub, kitchen is well equipped with dishes and even a crock pot but NO food items at all such as salt

Very nice ski in/out condo. Midweek January room rate was very attractive.

My husband and I went to Lutsen for our 10 year anniversary, we stayed in the condo with whirlpool. It was a beautiful room with a working fireplace. Even though the weather did not cooperate, we had 3 inches of rain that weekend and we had a tough time the first day with ice, but it did snow and we had one beautiful day of snowmobiling. Our next trip will be with our twin 7 year olds to ski.. Can't wait.

We chose to stay here because we wanted easy access to lutsen mountains, and it looked like a great place to relax for a few days from the online pictures. We have no kids. We paid ~$1100 for 4 nights in their 'nordic condo': this did not include lift tickets.

The one positive to Caribou was the restaurant "Moguls," which was outstanding, especially given the rest of our experience (which I'll get into below). Seriously, as good as any food I've had in the state. Whatever chef was in the kitchen certainly knows how to pick great cuts of meat, and also knows how to prepare them as ordered: steak, duck, seafood you name it. Wine list was diverse, upscale, but inexpensively priced. This was all a very pleasant surprise. Wait staff were great, and personable.

If I were to do it over again, I'd eat at the restaurant and stay somewhere else.

Ski-in/out was a strong claim. It's not like you can just hop on a trail from your front door. lift tickets could not be purchased at the lodge, and the ski-on runs are probably fine for skiers, but not really ideal for snowboarding if that's your deal. therefore the premium of "ski in/out" did not really add a lot of convenience for us over the other properties on the mountain. We just ended up walking to the village for tickets and better access.

Our room was an incredible disappointment. We got the 'nordic condo', which came with kitchen and fireplace. If I'd known what I was buying I would have paid more for better, or looked elsewhere. The picture online looked beautiful, and obviously the fireplace is very nice to have, but when we walked in we immediately called to see if we could buy an upgrade given the number of nights we were going to be cramped in that tiny room. none were available. the bed was NOT queen size, but a "full" that came down from the wall (Murphy-style) with a mattress that bowed in the middle. So at 6 ft. I slept for 4 nights with my feet off the edge. It also lacked privacy, since every word or movement from our neighbors could be heard through the room-adjoining door.

As far as things to do in the lodge, kids pretty much overran the amenities. The hot tubs were packed with teens, and the pool with toddlers (not the fault of the resort but you should know it's more of a family than a couples place). Therefore, if it rains (like it did one day for us) and everybody stayed in, we didn't find it very relaxing to be in the lodge due to all the noise. A big plus was free DVD rentals from the lodge and flatscreens in the room. This was pretty much a life saver.

All in, I've taken the time to write this to prevent others from being disappointed as we were. We both love northern minnesota and have enjoyed other places much more.
