There are newer facilities at Lutsen, but we stayed in the main Lodge, an older building that boasts the original large fireplace from the first lodge. The room was adequate in size and we loved our lake view. Winter evenings playing board games in front of the large lobby fireplace were very pleasant, and the 2 restaurants offered varied and tasty menus. We appreciated the snowshoe trail tips from the activities director and it was very nice that the snowshoes, xc skis, etc., were complimentary for guests.

Room Tip: Defintely opt for a lakeside room to enjoy the view.

My Family stayed in a Sea Villa just steps from the lake. The weather was very cold the whole weekend but the warmer lake created a beautiful spectical as steam rose throught the cold sunshine. We had planned to ski but ended up spending the weekend inside watching the lake which was quite satifiying. The townhouse was tight but well appointed. I've stayed in a room at the Lodge and in a Poplar river condo and the Sea Villas are definitely the way to go. Watch out for the 17% in taxes they add to the bill though. Ouch!

This is my third time staying in a Lutsen Sea Villa. I've really enjoyed each time I've stayed there in different seasons. The condo is just steps from Lake Superior and has all the amenities. One thing that's pretty outstanding (besides the view) is that even though there aren't new units, they have been designed in such a way that they don't really seem to age. The beds were great and the kitchen appliances were fairly new also. Dining at Lutsen Lodge is a great experience, and there's plenty of indoor and outdoor things to do.

Upon arrival we were excited to be there after our 5+ hour of travel, plus close to a hour of stopped traffic. The fresh snow was beautiful to say the least. While checking in we shared how excited to be there we were and had never visited before, the attendant could of cared less it appeared. The walk way to our building was not cleared nor was there a outside light.
We quickly settled in , sat on bed which squeaked with every move and you can feel every spring in the bed, along with that a huge stain all down the side of our box spring. The sheets and linens are very low quality, along with the towels, scratchy, old , discolored. Would recommend bringing along all your own comforts from home. The bath tub handle fell off as soon as we turned it and the knobs had melted candle wax from previous people.
With every entrance of another guest coming or going doors rattled and slam, not a quiet place, be prepared to hear everything.
The coffee pot is a 4 cup pot and the styrofoam cups are maybe 4oz cups, so glad I packed my own. There is is a small microwave and fridge which was nice.
From our unit it was just a short walk to the beautiful trails, we really enjoyed our walk and the breath taking views of the superior. We did go to the activities desk where we received very friendly cheerful help. We decided to go the ski lodge for a godula ride...BIG mistake, as soon as we reached the top where the chalet was they shut down the ride due to the winds, which is understandable... But how do you get down if you didn't have skis on?.. Wait for them to get a plan??? Which took 3 hours of my vacation, we came to get a romantic getaway and take in a beautiful ride, they said this had never happened before, obviously, because no one knew what to do. At one point we were told to walk down? There were others also who were not able to walk or did not have the proper clothing to even be out in it. My suggestion double check the weather conditions with them before going and ask questions if you don't ski..who would of known that could happen? .after all that we took in a few hours at the main lodge which was cozy and had a fire going and live music Saturday night which was very enjoyable.
If your looking to ski only and not be in your room, then this is the place for that, but if your looking for a cozy romantic getaway, this would not be what I would pick again.

Room Tip: Ask about every detail important to you, get unit with views of superior, closest to the water, not...

The location is beautiful, right on the lake with a shuttle to take you skiing at Lutsen Mountain. The lobby of the resort is also very nice and cozy with a giant fireplace and plenty of seating. I also had an opportunity to check out the condos, which are definitely the way to go if you're looking for a little nicer (larger, newer, cleaner) accommodations. All the staff I encountered were also helpful and friendly. The guest rooms in the lodge, however, were not very impressive. Small, very outdated furnishings, drafty windows that let in cold air off the lake even when completely closed, no bath ventilation, dingy shower, and no coffee maker. It was a little like camping in an old, rustic cabin which isn't so bad if that's what you're going for but the price might otherwise fool you into expecting something more.

I recently stayed at Lutsen Resort in one of the Poplar Bluff condominium units (building 530). The location is completely picturesque. Our unit overlooked Lake Superior and had a constant hum of waves crashing the shore. The unit was up-to-date with a warm fireplace, kitchenette, small patio, two double beds, and large whirlpool tub. If the extremely firm beds were upgraded to something more plush, I would stay here again in a heartbeat. As is, I would recommend bringing along a featherbed or down comforter to add some cushion. The pillows were good, but the mattresses were terrible. I also wished the heat/fan in the room was a bit noisier to drown out the sound of neighbors and offer a bit of white noise.

The walk to the main lodge was fairly easy from our unit, although it was a bit muddy and icy in spots (pack the right shoes!). The lodge is like a cozy cabin retreat and the views of Lake Superior are stunning. The restaurant on site had a tasty brunch buffet ($10.95). The Poplar Pub took good care of us over the weekend, and the upstairs meeting room was a great space for a group gathering. I traveled with a friend along with a large group of coworkers/families and we all had a great stay.

We arranged a shuttle through the resort to the mountain for skiing, which was quick and easy. The driver was friendly and accommodating. He dropped us off at our door after skiing and was quick to point out a large deer who had appeared next to one of the neighboring buildings.

All in all, it was a great stay. Given the 4.5-hour+ drive from the Twin Cities metro, I recommend taking advantage of the buy-2-stay-3-nights promotion the resort has to make the trip even more worthwhile.

Room Tip: Lodge rooms are a bit tight on space, but conveniently located near resort amenities. Poplar Bluff r...

Very neat place! After staying in hotels I did have to convince myself that this isn't a hotel. It is a historic lodge! We were on 2nd floor. We went up the stairway and down the narrow hall to our room. I giggled when we were going into our room because the doors are narrow. I said I felt like an elf! The room is just a small cabin bedroom. Very cute! No frills! Just a double bed with chenille bedspread! Just like my Grandma's cabin! Small TV and a small desk. It was cozy and cute! We had supper in the "Pub" and watched the Vikings loose to the Packers in the playoffs! The service was excellent. Sunday morning early we went down for breakfast and sat by the big window and watched the sunrise over Lake Superior! Overall very nice. A little pricey for the basics but a fun experience!

Room Tip: Our room was cute and small. If you want more room you will need to pay quite a bit more and get a...
