“Superior Hiking Trail near Lutsen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2012

We traveled to Minnesota (from Texas via Duluth Int'l Airport) to hike portions of the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT). We booked thru a web-site that provided "lodge to lodge" hiking. I requested their best property near Lutsen for a portion of our trip. They booked us in the Lutsen Resort in a lakeview room. The package included breakfast, a box lunch and a shuttle each day to the SHT. The Lutsen Resort is right on Lake Superior. There is a black sand/stone beach and people were actually swimming in the cold waters. The cars in the parking lot were almost all from Minnesota. It seems people from Minnesota come to the Lutsen for their own vacations. Also, two weddings were scheduled on the Saturday we were there --- nice set-up for weddings and guests. The hotel and its rooms are old (rustic?). The "lakeview" rooms overlook the lake but you need to keep your windows open (no A/C and not really needed). So, facing the lake you don't hear the highway traffic but you hear the people outside the hotel and any delivery trucks etc,. (one delivered at 4:30 in the morning). The people at the Lutsen were outstanding. The front desk and especially the activity staff (the ones driving you to the SHT) were great.
Here is a sample day: The prepaid breakfast included the buffet or anything on the menu. The buffet was good, but not great, and had a nice selection of items. However, the items from the menu were super. I had Blueberry pancakes one day and omelets another -- along with other sides. Then, you decide what segment of the SHT you will hike. You drive to the end of your hike and drop your car. The shuttle then takes you to the beginning of your hike and drops you off. The shuttle is free even if you do not have a package plan. Also, at check-in, you pre-select your box lunch. Box lunches were sandwiches (turkey, ham), chips, cookies, fruit and bottle of water. The SHT is very similar to the AT --- well marked and runs from Duluth up to Canada. It is NOT along the Lake but is primarily several miles from the Lake and you only see the Lake when at the higher elevations. However, it is very nice with rivers and even small gorges.
Our room at the Lutsen was small and had 2 Q beds but a small bathroom and not much walking area around the beds. There was an indoor pool and whirlpool. It seemed like a place that has return guests year after year. I would like to rate them a 5 but the rooms just aren't worthy of that rating.

We just returned from three nights in the Sea Villas at the Lutsen resort and we had an amazing family vacation. There is so much to do at the resort. We hiked and biked and played golf, horseshoes, swam, sea kayaked and played countless games. Off the property we also had a great time doing the alpine slide (every day), riding the gondola and hiking all over.

The staff are exactly what we would have dreamed up if we had any idea what to expect at the lodge. A great mix of older and younger, all very and informed. Our kids did a great afternoon camp and pizza and a movie night and we found everyone at the activities desk to be helpful and a pleasure to talk to. We felt as though we were treated like family. We can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: We loved the Sea Villas because they are right on the water and it sounds like the ocean at night. T...

This is an old lodge and thats what you get. No elevators. Actual "keys" for your room door. The doors lock by pushing in a button on the doorknob. The room and bathroom are very small. Double size beds. If your in the shower and someone flushes their toilet in another room, your shower gets cold! To pick up a wi-fi signal you have to be in a certain place in the main lobby. No air conditioning. There is a fan in your window. The restaurant prices were outrageous. Everyone was eating in the pub. There is a game room for the kids. The bon fires on the beach were nice and relaxing at night. You meet a lot of people there. They have a lot of board games to play in the main lobby. Shuffleboard outside. Probably wouldn't stay there again. There was 4 of us couples and we were having a good time in the pub and we were told to quiet down. Some people stopped and commented on the fun we were having and they wished they could join us.

Lutsen's is great if you have a lake-facing room, but if it faces the courtyard the security light over the pool room door shines into your room all night through the paper shades. Our dinner at the restaurant was mediocre, $150 and took over 2 hours to be served. We're always drawn to this magical bay, but the facilities don't live up to the atmosphere. Coffee in the morning is served in paper cups that are a torment to carry.

Beautiful beach overlooking Lake Superior. This old hotel is steeped in culture and history. There are numerous activities that are offered or can be coordinated through the staff. Beach yoga to kyaking. Great for families or couples alike.

We were a bit nervous about staying in the Sea Villas after we read some of the reviews, but we found them to be very comfortable and compatible with our needs. "Just the right amount of rustic," is how we describe it. The furnishings and appliances were not fancy, but they were modern. Also, we were literally steps away from Lake Superior and we had a nice deck for outdoor eating. Along with our stay we could take advantage of the many activities the main lodge has to offer. We went sea kayaking and took fly-fishing lessons. Both activities were well-instructed and a whole lot of fun. Our breakfasts at the main lodge were decent. We tried to cook most of our meals in the Villa to save a little cash.
My only complaint is as follows...I have to say that my spa experience was a bit underwhelming. The website advertises it as a full service Aveda spa, but my masseuse didn't use any Aveda products and the environment was reminiscent of a dimly lit doctor's office versus a resort spa. My massage felt okay, but mostly I just wanted to get out of there!
Spa experience aside, our stay was quite wonderful and we will be returning for more relaxation on the North Shore!

We stayed in the main lodge in a family suite (two queen beds and a hideaway double) with our three kids on a stormy day. The room's decor was older, but clean enough, and we had plenty of space despite needing to share one bathroom. The sink was outside the shower/toilet area, so that helped.

The kids loved the heated indoor pool and could have spent hours there! The lodge itself is charming and has gorgeous views of the lake. The friendly staff built a fire in the lobby fireplace in the evening, which made it especially cozy despite the rain outside. There are lots of places to sit, indoors and out, to take in the lake views.

We walked along the trails and path when the rain let up. The scenery is beautiful, and the walking paths are well maintained.

My husband used to come here as a child, so it was special for him to be able to visit this place with our kids. A great place to make new family memories!

Room Tip: Not all of the rooms in the main lodge have a view of the lake -- be sure to check a floor plan (ava...
