The rooms and spectacular views are wonderful. The pool was heated this year too (yay!) and the hot tub is really, really nice after a long hike. Overall a really fine place to stay.
A few suggestions:
Dining room, dining room, dining room ... year 3, same comments here.
Dining room is lovely and I'd love to visit it more except for the food.
Consider less heavy items - keep a few for some folks - but introduce fresher and lighter fare such as menu items at Coho nearby. Old school menu items are great, but cut back on some and add others.
Breakfast buffet was nice but awfully expensive.
Other than that, keep up the good work. I recommend the resort wholeheartedly and look forward to a better menu in the pretty dining room next year ... fingers crossed!
: )

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the lake!

This is my first review. We rented a 2 bedroom, 2 story with a loft. sea villa for 2 nights. We had an INCREDIBLE view of the water from the master bedroom. I did not want to leave the room. We were very close to the water. We ate at the lodge restaurant and were very happy with both the food and the service. Part of our group took a guided kayak tour and a guided hike and were very happy with both. Be sure to call and get signed up for your choice of activities. They do a great job. Everyone was courteous, knowledgeable, and helpful. Two of our 4 person group used the spa for massages and were very pleased. We drove to Grand Marais and enjoyed that area as well. We used the wood burning stove in the villa to roast s'mores. After checkout, we talked with a lady at the front desk about other lodging options for a future return visit. She was extremely helpful allowing us to look at a log cabin and a condo unit. She was very patient in answering our questions. Great service! We travel ALOT and can't wait to return. We saw many things that we never had a chance to do because of time constraints- ping pong, shuffleboard, a drink in the pub, the outdoor fire pits, we never even made it to the pool or hot tub. Our unit could use some updating but was clean. It had such a good location that I would probably request it again rather than move to an updated unit. We used the wi -fi and had no problems at all. We can't stand to be without internet or to have it be slow so we were pleasantly surprised. We wish we could have stayed longer but back to work we went--Hope to be back at the Lutzen Resort soon!

Room Tip: Take the time to look at the lodging choices on the website. Ask questions when you make your reser...

We were most pleasantly surprised with this resort. It is located beautifully along the shoreline of Lake Superior and offers a range of activities from Kayaking to the Executive 9 hole par three golf course. (not too well maintained) There is an eighteen hole course located close by. The resort is 20 miles from Grand Marais. We stayed in a three bedroom condo and it was really nice with great views out over the lake. There are shared gas grills at the Condos and beach fires at night for the kids to make marshmallows. Marshmallows are free at the front desk, graham crackers and chocolate can be purchased to make smores. I would order from the menu for the free breakfast as the buffet was a bit lacking. I intend to come back here as the overall experience was great.

Room Tip: Condos are great, but its a bit of a hike down the steps to the main lodge. The main lodge would be...

Sea Villas are feet from the shore with fire pits every few units. Have had a wonderful time having nightly bonfires and hot dog roasts under the stars while we listened to the waves crash. Units are rustic but clean and enjoyable. The one bedroom units have a steep ladder to a loft and are not suitable for very young children or older people. There is a pool, hot tub and play ground nearby in the complex. The main lodge is two miles away and offers a restaurant. Hiking nearby is excellent. A 20 mile trip to charming Grand Marais to shop and dine is always on the agenda. A great family place! We love it.

Room Tip: Almost all sea villas have great views and are right on the shore.

We have been coming to Lutsen Resort yearly for over 25 years. We have experienced all of the accommodations... and they all have their charms. We have never been disappointed. The restaurant is perfect. The whole place is a great escape. I like to "live" walking distance to the main lodge. Of course there are little weaknesses. There are a lot of junky TV's... and you might prefer upgraded furniture here and there. (We don't come for TV or our favorite easy chair, do we?) I would like it if the resort kept more local citizens as employees, like in the old days. They depend a bit too much on recruits from afar. But... I understand the economics of it and feel like they are doing their best to offer good value. The "recruits" ...are good people. The main feature is the expansive shore, the varied views, the respect for nature. It's nice to stay for a week, but three nights does the job. You can walk a long long way without dealing with cars. Short drives take you to excellent starting points for walks. Grand Marais to the north is full of rewards.

Room Tip: The main lodge is too small and too close to neighbors. The cabins are perfect for seclusion. The c...

The lodge is older, but very well maintained. They have an indoor pool and also offer massage services. They have a game room, a restaurant and a pub that serves food in the main lodge. A little elevator music in the pub would have been very nice it sure was quiet in there. We found the cost at the pub manageable but in the dining room the prices were way way out of our budget. EVERYTHING was way over 20.00.. Our nicely decorated (very comfortable) king bed room was located in the main lodge overlooking the lake. THE WINDOWS OPEN! The wi-fi was spotty and slow. The main lodge is the original. Lots of character clean neat and tidy. If you sit quietly you can almost imagine the history and different characters who have stayed in this historic lodge. They walls are thin, the shower drains very slowly and the rooms are small but we loved staying there!! They also offer newer cabins and townhomes. We preferred the lodge over the newer accomodations. We usually stay in hotels like Holiday Inn but this place is nothing like a Holiday Inn. The hiking trails just outside of the lodge lead you to a long covered bridge and walk over a rushing stream headed to empty into lake Superior. The inside sitting area (comfy cozy furniture) has a huge fireplace with lots of large windows that give great views if you opt to stay inside if the weather is chilly We always go to Grand Marais for sight seeing and shopping. Lunch at The Irish Pub in Cascade right on hwy. 61 was super and reasonable. I had my first draft Guiness. All of the staff is really glad to help with information about area for hiking, golfing, skiing, fishing, etc. They are always glad to help and they smile--that goes a long way. THANK YOU WE HAD AN ENJOYABLE TIME.
