“Nice Getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2011

We enjoyed the hotel and restaurants. We will return. However, we will request a room that is not above the kitchen. We heard pots and pans from about 4:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. We recommend others to request a room away from or not above the kitchen.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2011

We were headed from the Twin Cities to the boundary waters on our motorcycle for a couple of nights. On our way up Hwy 61 from Duluth, we were unprepared for the coldness of the "Lake Effect" from Lake Superior. Around 4:30p we decided we stop at Lutsen Resort by the Lake just to see if they might have a room. As we drove in, we were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the resort nestled in the hills, but sitting literally on the beach of Lake Superior. We were given a couple of choices of rooms, based on size, view and expense. Since we were just planning on staying the night, we chose the smaller room without a view to save a few bucks. It was very clean, slightly dated (maybe on purpose-?) located in the main lodge which is the oldest building of the resort. We warmed up in the hot tub and then had a marvellous dinner in the restaurant located in the main lodge with spectacular lake views. Service was great! After dinner, we roamed some of the scenic trails with covered bridges around the resort. There were a couple of campfires on the beach. Families were playing shuffle board--it was all very friendly and relaxing. After a good night's sleep and a great breakfast in the morning, we were off to the rest of our adventures!

Room Tip: Ask to see the room/s first so you can decide!

We would definitely return to Lutsen Resort; although next time we would probably try the sea villas or lake view room. The Lodge is nice and clean with friendly staff. The rooms in the lodge need a little renovation but overall; we were satisfied with our stay and the beds were really comfortable. There are plenty of resort activities and the food is excellent. If you decide to get a massage at Waters Meet Spa, ask for Christine O; she was fabulous!

We wanted an affordable winter vacation without airfare, so we decided to go to 3 popular northern Minnesota destinations on "deals."  We bought coupons for two of them, and found a late season bargain on the third one. Spending a few nights at each resort gave us a good perspective to compare resorts.

Lutsen Resort is located right off Highway 61, on Lake Superior.  It is close to the Lutsen Ski Hill, but not part of it.   After seeing the lodging up by the ski hill, there is no question that Lutsen Resort was a more pleasant, attractive and relaxing  place to stay while skiing. Driving to the ski hill was easy; also good driving access to x-c ski trails, although there is much better x-c skiing by driving farther to the Central Gunflint Trail.

The coupon deal meant we were in the historic lodge building.  In the right mood you would call it historic; in another frame of mind, you’d just call it old.  We liked it well enough, but I would try to ask for a room with a lake view if I came back.

The lake was wild while we there, fascinating to watch.  But you can't just watch the lake indefinitely, and after that you do need to leave the resort to get to other activities.  It is located on a strip in between the lake and the highway, so the natural beauty is mainly the lake view.

Food was excellent in the pub/bar. There is a great wine list in the main restaurant, but eating there was out of our price range. We didn't have the option to cook in our room, so that made the Lutsen visit a little more expensive. Everyone at Lutsen was extremely helpful.

We'd like to come back in summer, but we envision being here for a couple days and then moving on.  I think it might be better viewed as a hotel room within driving distance of many attractions, and not as a stand-alone destination for a long trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view room, not parking lot view

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2011

My girlfriend and I were going to get married on Sunday April 10th. She planned most of the wedding and I was in charge of the honeymoon arrangements. No pressure here!! We opted to have a short one night honeymoon up the north shore. We will take a longer trip this summer when time allows. But we love Lake Superior and wanted to do something casual. After researching several places to stay we decided to spend our honeymoon at Lutsen Resort. They had many lodging options to choose from. The log cabins seemed to have what we were looking for. She gave me the go-ahead to book our stay! These cabins are situated down the shore from the main lodge and overlook Lake Superior. Just far enough to be secluded but close enough to walk back to the main lodge for dinner.

After the wedding we headed up the shore for our stay. Just a short 90 minute drive from Duluth we made it there in no time. You never can be 100 percent sure what a place will be like by looking at a website. After checking in at the main lodge we headed down to our cabin. It didn’t take long to realize we had made a great choice! Size wise they were a lot larger than we really needed. They have two full bedrooms and also have a pullout couch in the living room. So they would easily accommodate 4-6 people. The cabins are very spacious but very cozy at the same time. Our cabin was elevated directly above the shoreline and had a great view of the lake. Everything was clean and tidy. They even had a bottle of champaign waiting for us in the fridge. Not the least expensive option for 2 people on a honeymoon but hey…..I’m only getting married once! Why not splurge a bit!

We settled in and went for a walk down by the shore. They have a great spot on Lake Superior where the Poplar River empties into the lake. A couple of covered bridges connect you with the shoreline on the other side of the river. Overlooking the lake is the main lodge building. Seems as if the lodge takes you back in time! The minute you walk in you feel the hospitality. A fire was crackling in huge stone fireplace that sat opposite the front desk. We were looking forward to dinner after our hike so we headed into the dining room. Awesome views of the lake set the mood for our dinner. Our food and the service we received were exceptional. In the morning we headed back again to the lodge for a wonderful breakfast. After breakfast we walked down to the beach and watched the waves roll in. My wife and I didn’t want to leave! Looking back we came away with many fond memories of our stay at Lutsen. We will definitely be back in the years to come!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2011

We stayed for three nights from Mar 20 - Mar 23 in Sea Villa A2. The villas have AMAZING views, with HUGE corner windows in the living room and master bedroom, and they're just steps from Lake Superior. We had a two-story villa, which had a second bedroom and a loft bedroom - which was perfect because our teen son and daughter could have separate rooms. (Our son was a bit disappointed because his bedroom was the only room in the place without a lake view. But still, it was a really good-sized room, and very comfortable).

We were SO glad to find a place where we could bring our dogs, because we enjoyed having them with us, there were great trails to walk them on, and we didn't have to pay to board them somewhere while we were gone.

The whole place was VERY clean and comfortable. Nice furniture, full kitchen, nice little wood-burning stove (that we didn't have a chance to use), lake-view deck and balcony off master. SWEET!

We did the mid-week half price ski package (and probably couldn't have afforded it otherwise). This package was booked through Lutsen Mountains (the ski place), and there was a mix up where when we checked in; they sent us first to a one-story villa. I went right back up to the registration building, and originally the guy made it like it was going to be a big deal to change it, but then I showed him my confirmation e-mail, and that made it suddenly no big deal. (He said he was really glad I had that with me). We quickly moved over to a different villa and it was truly no big deal. Having seen both, however, I DEFINITELY recommend the two-story. The one-story villa had a sleeping loft, but the master bedroom was right by the front door and faced the parking area rather than the fabulous balcony and lake view that we had in the two-story.

I can't even describe how very comfortable we were, and how perfect a family place it was. There was a big living/dining room where we could all be together, but five levels and three bedrooms made it so we could spread out and have some space when we needed to. It was super-convenient to skiing, but being right on the lake with those fabulous views was reason enough to be there! Even though we went there to ski, I would definitely go back in the summertime - or any time of year!

We booked a weekend here through a deeply discounted special. While we enjoyed many things about Lutsen Resort, the actual lodging wasn't among them. The lodge room was simple and rustic, which was partly charming and partly just disappointing (for instance, one of the shower handles was coming off). The carpet was stained and things were pretty worn. The worst part, however, was the noise. The walls and floors are very thin and you can hear everything happening around you. Be aware that Lutsen is a family-friendly place, and there are a lot of kids. They stampeded up and down the hallways and made a lot of noise--and the adults weren't always much more considerate. Our first night was quite noisy; the second one was somewhat better. Our room was on the hallway to the pool area, which added traffic. Had we paid full price for this room, we wouldn't have been happy with it. The one good aspect of the room was that it was a "garden view" room but still partially overlooked the lake.

Other than the room itself, Lutsen was great. The lounge area is cozy, with lake views, a roaring fireplace, and good live music on Saturday night. It's a perfect place to relax with a book. The pool/hot tub/sauna area is large and we used it a lot; the game room is also a nice feature. We ate at the pub one night and the food was fine, predictably overpriced but not horribly so. The property is in a beautiful location and is fun to explore.

The best part of our stay was the service. The staff were almost all exceptionally warm and helpful. We ended up being the only people signed up for the cross-country ski tour, so we got a private trip with their wonderful activities director. He was friendly, interesting, and brimming with knowledge about the area and the sport. I'd highly recommend their guided activities, especially since they're free.

Other quick notes: the wifi is free but slow, there aren't many offsite dining options within 20 miles, rooms have DVD/VCRs, we appreciated their commitment to eco-friendliness.

We'd enjoy another stay at Lutsen, but not in the lodge rooms. If you don't have children and don't have a big tolerance for their energy I'd recommend you do the same--and avoid the peak vacation times.
