Popped in here on way to Duluth. Wanted my kids to see the headwaters of the Mississippi and the pines. We stopped at the gift shop/interpretative center and we enjoyed looking at the displays. We then went to the headwaters and my son walked across and both kids played in the shallow water of the headwaters. Then we took the scenic drive around to see the largest white pine and red pine. Red pine’s top fell off a few years back so it’s no longer the largest. There were also insane amounts of mosquitoes on the way to the red pine. Bring spray! Nice stop. Will have to spend more time and maybe camp there next time.

Did you know this is the second oldest state park in US. Minnesota has made a huge commitment to the preservation of the scenery and history here. Great trails for walking/hiking. Wildlife sittings are certainly possible. A great place to commune with nature and the birth of old man river

Itasca State Park is a state park but is more like a National Park. This is one of the most magical places on earth. I recommend staying in of there park cabins for the whole experience. Make sure you book very early as they fill up fast. With the lake and hikes, amazing trees this place has it all.

With almost zero light polution at night, Itasca State Park is a great place for stargazing. The summer challenges you may face are the long days and the fact that skies stay backlit untill 11:00 PM. Naturally, the occassional MN mosquito is another. So stay up late, sleep in a bit and have a hardy breakfast at Douglas Lodge before your next hike on the many lakeside and wilderness trails..............perfect.

When we visited Itasca, it was early spring and was drizzling for the whole weekend. The entire park was lush green and refreshing. We grabbed a map from the park office and took the wilderness drive, and alongside were many small scenic views overlooking Lake Itasca

The wilderness drive was splendid, we hiked few viewpoints and never got tired. We spent the entire weekend in Itasca state park and we will go again, preferably overnight camping next time :-)

There are a lot of trails that you can hike and a lot of campsites. It is also said the park is equally breathtaking in winter and one of the best places for winter camping. If you are planning to camp though, book well in advance as they get filled up pretty quick
