“Local Hangout From Bygone Era”
Reviewed March 14, 2012

Gorman's is a local favorite, and it boasts a long and sentimental history. It is basically an unassuming hamburger joint with some of the best malts and milk shakes around. The decor is well-worn and may appear tired to some, but to regulars it is the way they like it. It's a short drive from the local, no-control-tower airport and it is a popular spot for private pilots and flying enthusiasts. Meals, including breakfast, are generous and tasty -- reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s. There are an assortment of vintage wooden booths to choose from, various sized tables, and an outdoor dock overlooking a meadow and cornfield. If you want to step back in time, this is the place -- and the prices reflect that. The food, by the way, is delicious and the staff is friendly and informal. If you don't like traditional, Midwestern hamburger joints with a lot of character, stay away.

“cosy, family feel - good menu”
Reviewed October 12, 2011

Lovely old style family diner with secluded booths. Seat yourself. Waitresses were prompt and friendly. Good family style menu including old-fashioned malts and shakes. I would recommend their Broasted Chicken - careful, it's very hot when served up! I loved the walls decorated with genuine old photographs of the area from 1900's!!! Well worth stopping by - but they close at 8.00pm!!!!

“Good Food & Historic Lake Elmo Farm Photos”
Reviewed August 9, 2011

We were looking for an early breakfast place and saw Gormans opened at 6. Our food was good but was the usual breakfast fare, except for their potatos and onions which were fried extra crispy and extra tasty. Our waitress was personable and made both the locals and tourists (like us) feel welcome. Their lunch & dinner menus looked extensive. Had it not been 7 in the morning I was tempted to try one of their old-fashioned malts. I did see besides the usual cafe coffee they advertised expressos and lattes, plus they have a drive thru window. I was surprised to see a large deck out back with a relaxing view that looks across corn fields over to a farmstead instead of staring onto a busy street or at another building like most restaurant's decks.

Every inch of the interior is decorated with historic Lake Elmo window-framed photos and antique artifacts from the area. See their website for an interesting 'About Us' article on how Gormans restaurant has grown into what it is. Below is a quick synopses:
In 1980, Ed opened Gorman's Restaurant with just 23 seats. It's expanded four times since and now seats 250. Ed is the unofficial town historian whose vast collection of over 1000 old farm photos and other artifacts donated by the locals define Lake Elmo at the turn of the century thru WWII.

We basically spent the time between when we ordered our food and it was delivered reading the walls. I noticed his collection also includes a old glass sided cabinet stacked full of yellowed newspapers from World War II with interesting front page articles to read.

“Very satisfactory spot for a delicious and casual meal”
Reviewed July 10, 2010

The menu has breakfast all day and a good assortment of salads, soup, burgers, wraps, hot and cold sandwiches, chicken and a great variety of old fashioned malts. The service was prompt and friendly. Our order was delivered fresh and hot. The fries were not drowned in salt like you find so many other places..

Gorman's is easy to find 4-5 miles due south of Hwy 36 on Lake Elmo Ave. There's plenty of easy parking. A large deck w/ umbrellas overlooks fields and woods (not a noisy street or parking lot). Inside are many comfy booths. This is a spot where the local folk come - the owner or waitress greeted many customers by name. The interior is decorated with hundreds of photos of historic Lake Elmo as well as many antique artifacts from the area. Should the owners tire of running a restaurant, the place could become the Lake Elmo historical society.
