“A Large Hole In The Ground”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

You may think that a mine view is looking at a hole in the ground. But, the "hole" is amazing. What you have to realize is that 85% of the steel for WW II came from ore dug out of the Iron Range in northern Minnesota. With Hibbing being the "Home of the Largest Open Pit Mine in the World (Hull Rust Mahoning) the view from this area is amazing. This single mine, one of four in the Minnesota Arrowhead, three miles long, two miles wide and over 535 feet deep, is the biggest operating open pit iron mine in the world

“Stop by if you are in the area”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

Interesting to see, but sad when you think about the destruction of forest, etc. Visiting this enormous open pit mine is a hands on way to learn about the costs of our lifestyle. Call it an eco-adventure, I guess; it is neat to watch iron ore mining and to see the huge machines. There is no cost to go but voluntary donations are much appreciated.

“man made Grand Canyon”
Reviewed March 27, 2012

Anyone in the Hibbing MN are during the summer would be amiss for not taking a few minutes to go to this site. Ir was in its hay day (1910s - 1960s) the largest open pit iron mine in the world. Looking into the mine it is hard to believe that men actually dug it out. this was the major source of American iron tha fed both industry and the military for many many years.
The views are amazing.

“Almost the Grand Canyon”
Reviewed December 27, 2011

A very nice mine view of the largest open pit iron mine, maybe in the world, with 300 ton trucks and huge electric shovels. Works 24/7 and most Wednesdays at 11 AM there is an explosive blast that will thrill you. Don't miss.
