This was very expensive for my self and 3 grandchildren ($88.00). The trip was mostly shopping. I had a fabulous learning experience out of Rochester for those Amish. We went into a home, into where they made the furniture, onto a farm and learned so much. Too, the guide was knowledgeable. This experience the guide repeated herself several times on many things, read from her notebook while driving (it sat between her and the steering wheel), often said she was not sure but thought about something. It left me feeling empty and expecially the 3 children (teenagers so were interested to learn). I was going to bring a motor coach load but not after my experience today.
I'm not sure what tour you all took. 4 of us took the Amish Tours from Harmony MN. Its a pink building next to tourism center. $25 per person to ride in the tour bus/van for 2.5 hours. First our tour bus was an older bus set up like a airport transit van/bus. Dingy older. The driver was the tour guide who talked into the microphone that was tied on with a rope near windshield. Our tour guide a woman who held a 3 ring binder in her lap and read from it while she drove. When she turned or went over bumps she held the microphone from falling off with one hand and drove with the other. Distracted driving much? She at times made comments that were questionable. She said one amish lady had a child that was a dwarf, not a mongloid but the other kind. Um ok? Halfway through our tour our bus started smoking. The break lights were on and wouldn't turn off. Smoke was coming into the vents and floor boards. The tour guide didnt know what to do. She asked us to get the number for the tour place. Then asked us to call them. Um no that's your job! A second bus was on way to pick us up, but she said the second bus had broke down the week before. So hopefully it was working now! 2nd bus came and this tour guide was more knowledgeable. But 2nd bus had loose ceiling panels that hit us in the head. And there wasn't enough seats. I sat on my friends lap! This bus was in rough shape. The ceiling leaked water in 2 spots. Dirty and skiny. Smelled like mold. The front windshield was completely fogged up and the driver wiped a small spot and then asked us not to breathe.? A passenger had to get up and turn the defrost on for the driver. Maybe the owner should take some of this money and do some vehicle maintenance? 13 passengers x $25, no reason to be so run down, or dangerous.
My thoughts, the tour was somewhat informative, but we found a large selection of maps and info at the visitors center for free. Its not really a tour of their homes/farms, more just a ride to their small shops and you listen to them on the way. You can pick up maps for free and drive yourself for free. So maybe save the $100 that we spent on the tour. Pick up the info at the tourism center. Drive ourselves. Use the money we saved to buy some nice Amish food, pastries, trinkets, rugs, furniture.
What a great way to experience and gain knowledge about the Amish culture. Opportunity to see and purchase Amish crafts and food.
While it was interesting to go around to the different farms, our guide was very long winded, and seemed to have some difficulties staying on the roads (lots of jerking the van). In the end we sat in the shade in the van heavy with flies and listened to her read her notes aloud to us. What had been advertised as a 2-2.5 hour tour took more than three hours.
We had a fantastic time learning about all things Amish and their culture, some things I found to be quite a shock. We stopped at quite a few farms where we could browse and purchase their goods - my absolute favorite was our final stop, the bakery. The banana bars, pecan rolls and cherry hand pies were INCREDIBLE.
Take advantage of the knowledge of these wonderful guides as well as getting some of the most delicious foods and beautifully crafted items!
Thank you Amish Tours of Harmony for such a wonderful morning!
Each fall we enjoy a late fall autumn foliage trip to SE Minnesota. The past few years we have stopped in the Harmony area and observed the Amish people. We have taken the Amish Tour two different times and have thoroughly enjoyed them. You have a very knowledgeable guide who takes you to several Amish homes and they show you their crafts that they produce. You ride in a small bus and drive the back roads in this Amish community. Different times you may observe farm work being done by horsepower and you see the Amish traveling in their buggies.
