“The Best Bed for the Money”
Reviewed April 14, 2010

There is not much to say about this hotel. It is average in a lot of ways but the bed in my room was amazing. I slept really well and it was an unexpected treat. The breakfast is average free hotel fare but they do offer a few hot items like eggs and sausage. the employees were all very gracious both at check in and check out.
The location near the airport is nice but there is nothing else to do. I am not sure if that is true of Grand Rapids as a whole or just the area I stayed in.

Was booked at the Country Inn on the south side of Grand Rapids, Minnesota for a business trip between Christmas and New Year's 2007. When booking here, pay attention that you are booking in Minnesota and not Michigan.

The staff were quite friendly and helpful. There was a computer available, cookies in the evening, a drink voucher for the neighboring Sawmill Supper Club and a decent selection of breakfast items.

Love the year around sign "No hockey sticks allowed in the hotel." That's how you know you are in northern Minnesota!

Pets are welcome and they get treats at check in. Hotel provides pooper scooper bags in a convenient dispenser near the front entry.

  • Liked — Pet Friendly. Great shower water pressure.
  • Disliked — No refridgerator in the room.

I stayed at this hotel during a business visit to Grand Rapids, MN. Do not confuse this hotel with the one in Grand Rapids, Michigan, if searching the internet, or making a booking. There is the same type of hotel there!

The hotel was clean and in good shape. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The rooms were spacious and warm (the temperature was 4F when we arrived). Bathrooms were clean. There are free USA Today newspapers and cookies. The breakfast area is right next to the lobby. Breakfast is included and is basic - cereal, bagels, muffins, cinnabuns, fruit - typical for this type of place (e.g., Hampton Inn).

I used the Exercise Room. It had a treadmill, bike, stepper and multi-weight machine. They were in good shape. There is also a good size indoor pool here.

Wireless internet is included and this worked well in my room.

We booked through AMEX corporate travel for $92 + taxes. The hotel told us that if you call them directly, the rate is $62!!

The hotel is well located, across from a shopping center which has a Target, supermarket, Walmart, etc.. It is just south of the center of town. There is a restaurant next door, the Sawmill, which has a good reputation for this town (not upscale - staple food, large portions, at reasonable prices). We ate at the Forest Lake Restaurant, which is a short way west of the center of town, down Route 2. The food is probably similar, but the Forest Lake also has a steak house.

There is an AmericInn just down the road and based on previous experience, I would guess that it is pretty similar, with maybe slightly smaller rooms. These are probably the best options in Grand Rapids.

  • Liked — Convenient location, comfortable
  • Disliked — A bit expensive for the location (via travel agency)

My experiences with the Country Inn Brand are very mixed, in fact, some of their properties are quite terrible. However, this particular property is quite nice. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The mini-suite I had was very clean and comfortable. They are pet friendly and welcomed my dog with some nice treats. There is a large lawn in back where pets are welcome to play. The location is convenient for anyone wishing to tour some of the amazingly beautiful natural spots in the area, including the numerous state parks, Indian Reservations and outdoor sports facilities. There is a guest laundry, a nice expanded continental breakfast each morning, and a real homey feel in the lobby and throughout the hotel.
