Owner description: Discover the past, present and future of Minnesota's forests through guided tours of a 1900s era logging camp and hands-on environmental learning programs. Board the moored river "wanigan," a floating cook shack, take a seat on the porch of a 1930s Minnesota Forest Service patrolman's cabin, climb a 100-foot fire tower and explore the site's self-guided trails.

Timber has, and still does, play a large role in Minnesota's history and economy. The Forest History Center lets you time travel back to when timber was king and let's you experience how the lumberjacks lived, worked and played.

Very informative and educational.

If you are interested in the history of forestry in Minnesota or just forestry in general, this is well worth a visit. Enjoyed listening to presenters and just wandering around. My favorite thing was the log jam area and the log rollers. You can cover the area in an hour if you have too, but 2-3 hours is better. Enjoyable, educational afternoon.

We were celebrating a family reunion in Grand Rapids this summer and all visited the Forest History Center. It is an old Logging Camp with all the buildings, equipment and even the metal dinnerware in the mess hall and long johns hanging in the bunk house. The staff are wonderful actors and take you on an adventurous tour as though you just joined up as a logger. Wow, were these guys amazing - such hard workers in the middle of the Minnesota winter! My great grandmother (who is no longer with us) used to tell us stories of when she cooked for the loggers - I have a whole new appreciation for what she and the hungry men around her went through. This is a fabulous center - you get to relive a piece of pioneering history.
