the hotel is ok - nothing special, but comfortable. As others have noted, the lobby is smoky and could use some renovation. The restaurant though, is where the troubles really start! We stayed overnight here enroute to another destination, as it is virtually the only place north of Grand Marais that was on our way. It was a Friday night, which may have been our misfortune. Everything was very busy with weekend gamblers. At 7PM, we were told that there would be 30 minute wait; ok, we'll go to the casino for few minutes. No, the pagers do not work in the casino! This alone makes no sense - discourages patronage there. So - we waited. And waited. And waited. By the time we were seated at 9PM, we had visited the Trading Post up the road for a viable alternative, pitched a fit (or two) with the hostess, and learned more than we ever wanted to about their seating priorities. Bottom line, in our opinion, the restaurant is there to serve the gamblers, typical hotel guests do not make the radar. Beyond that, whomever actually makes seating decisions (not the hostess) appears to have no management or people skills - we saw too many interactions with guests and employees to believe otherwise.

Within the restaurant, the non-smoking and smoking sections are separated by only two steps - smoking above the non - so the entire place is essentially smoking. Add to this uninterested servers (by 9PM, perhaps they were tired. This is the "official" closing time - but there was still a line of folks waiting), mediocre, high-priced food, and the result is memorable evening for all of the wrong reasons.

Don't make our mistake; drive further, or find another route - it's just not worth it.

We stayed at the Hollow Rock Resort, which is owned by the grand portage casino and lodge. It's 3 miles south of there on 61. There are 8 cabins. We stayed in the Loon (7). Two rooms with double beds and also living area and full kitchen. This is right on the lake. No tv reception or wifi, but there is a tv with DVD. Almost hate to post this hidden gem!

It is definitely a long trip, but we were looking forward to using the pool & sauna-NO LUCK! It was under maintenance-the hotel said they couldn't locate the maintenance person. We were assured it would be open later in the evening-did not happen! When I talked to the front desk the next morning, they told us we didn't guarantee a pool or sauna! The front desk staff even smirked when they said it! That would have been nice to know when we called to make our reservation!
The breakfast was a GREAT deal and very good. The area is beautiful, but we probably wouldn't stay there again!

Our room was really nice looking and comfortable. Loved the two sink areas and thermostat on wall. Lobby and restaurant were smokey which we aren't used to. Restaurant staff seemed short staffed and disorganized. Long wait to get seated, flies pestered us the whole meal and waitress brought wrong meal. Food was good but higher priced than we were hoping. Nice view in restaurant.

When this hotel and restaurant was built in the 1970s," it was a Radisson Hotel and, in my opinion, was very beautiful for the time. The casino was added later. It seems to need a little remodeling - at least in the lobby. Seems too crowded when entering. We ate in the dining for lunch and it was good enough. The chicken wild rice soup is a specialty from the beginning, but it wasn't as good as I remembered (needed salt is all) and our sandwiches were delicious. Our server was great. The view from our table couldn't be beat. I've not been in a room for years, so can't help with that.
