“Beautiful Lake Superior and Gambling too!”
Reviewed July 29, 2011

We enjoyed our stay at this lovely log lodge on the shore of Lake Superior. The room was nicely decorated and roomy with a knockout view of the Lake. There were some trails thru the woods and plenty of room to roam on the beach. This place is very remote so try not to forget anything important. Gambling was fun, food was ok and the area was fabulous if you like nature and especially waterfalls. There are many within an easy walk from your car. Can't wait til next year!!

So if you are visiting grand portage national monument or taking an isle royale ferry, this is the only game in town. And they know it. And it shows.

lackluster service at checkin. had to wait several minutes for someone to even show up, and then it was a texting teenager more interested in her little screen than our needs

we paid for a lakeside room, and then the blinds were broken so we could not raise them and get the full view. called front desk who said they would send someone. they never did.

area by lake could use some grass, it just looks desolate as a dirt patch (see photo)

They have a newsletter that shows the winners at the casino (who all seem to be from canada) , and boy do they all look miserable. It was so sad, I didn't even go down and use the casino credit they gave me on a slip of paper with the checkin materials.

Customer service just doesn't matter to these people. The room was nice, the lake is nice, the pool was nice. We avoided the restaurant based on other reviews here. We feel good about this choice.

I have stayed in this hotel a handful of times, and everything time I am dissapointed. But then I stay again because of the location (perfect location for an overnight on a trip we take every year), and I think "It can't really be that bad." Year, after year, after year. It's fine, really - or I wouldn't go back like we do. Here is my experience: the restaurant is CONTINUALLY awful, and has been for probably 10 years. This year we thought we'd give their pizza a try (and have it in our room). It was somehow a challenge getting them to take the order. We tried calling the number provided in the room dining book, that didn't work. Then we walked to the front desk, they sent us to the dining room. They said they'd call when it was ready, and we'd go get it. They didn't...my husband finally went down and there it was sitting. Argh. BUT - the saving grace was that the pizza was actually not bad. Obviously nothing to write home about, but it wasn't bad by any means! We will definitely go that route if we stay there again. At face value, it generally appears to be clean - but if you look closely - it's just kind of dirty. The carpets in the elevators were awful, and there were fly paper strips hanging in the pool area. I appreciate them trying to control flies - but it's not fun to look while swimming and trying to relax, hoping they don't fall into the pool. The pool water was nice and warm - although very chlorinated (although that's probably better than germs!). The rooms are fine - again, they work for a quick night's sleep. The Casino slots were tight - but that's not new for this casino in my experience either. The staff does not ever seem happy to help or be working there. On the plus side - they do have a great location on the lake, and my daughter enjoyed the playground equipment they have set up.

If you are in this area, stay at a cute place farther south - there are great little towns like Grand Marais, Two Harbors, etc - just somewhere before you get to Grand Portage. One of these years we'll do that too!

This is a very average hotel with a very small casino. Hotel is not fancy at all, but was pretty clean and very reasonably priced. Staff were not friendly at hotel or restaurant, but very nice at casino. Would definitely not recommend hotel's restaurant, based on service we received there. Would probably not recommend going there, unless you are just traveling through the area and needed a cheap place to stay.

We stayed at the lodge before departing for Isle Royale. Price was very reasonable, $59, especially for Memorial Day weekend. You could get a discount for signing up for their casino card, but we passed on that. The room was very clean and well laid out. Nice view of the bay. For being the only option in the area, it was very nice, clean, and affordable. Would be nice if there was a continental breakfast, but there is a small store where you can get your basics.

We stayed here before a trip to Isle Royale and got there after the buffet was closed. The food in the casino was the worst I've ever experienced. There was absolutely nothing for healthy people to eat there at all. Casino was filled with smoke and I could hardly even stand at the counter.

We stayed here on a Thursday night and still paid $95 plus tax. Very nice room however casino was very small. Very smoky also. The restaurant was great food, we joined the palyers club and got the prime rib for 9.99 also the next morning got breakfast for 3.99. I didn't look at the menu to see how expensive the rest of the food was. I would stay here again only if I was on my way again to the border. Wasn' t much else to do, also there was no cell phone or wi fi service as you are literally in the middle of nowhere when you go here. Oh yeah the front desk staff when we checked in was very unfriendly and hardly said a word besides cash or credit to pay. Thought that was bad customer service. When we left in the morning the gal at the front was a lot friendlier and nicer than the one the night before.
