Owner description: The North American Bear Center is the only educational facility of its kind - it helps people learn from the bears themselves about bear behavior, ecology, and their relations with humans. There is a huge need for accurate information about bears worldwide and the mission of the non-profit North American Bear Center is to advance the long-term survival of bears worldwide by replacing misconceptions with scientific facts about bears

The North American Bear Center is a must see. There are many exhibits that teach about black bears. There's also a part of the NABC that has things that are of interest to kids. A highlight is being able to view the 3 bears that reside in a beautiful wooded area and pond from a viewing deck and a large indoor viewing window. You could spend hours in here between seeing the exhibits, taking photos, seeing the artwork, and watching the bears roam about. Don't miss this one!

“Beautiful, educational, fun”

I watched the black bear's webcams this past winter and I frequent the Lily The Black Bear facebook page so the NABC was the reason we came to Ely! The center doesn't look like much from the outside but when you get inside there is so much to see! There is a cub room for young kids, exhibits about bears and what they eat, and about common misconceptions about bears. It was very interesting to see pictures from magazines were it was the same bear with his mouth open over and over, also that these bears are trained to open their mouth like that!

On site their are three black bears who have a large enclosure to explore and they all looked very happy. We spent about 2.5 hours there but you could have easily spent more time there, I already knew some of the things from the Facebook page and from reading their website (Bear.org) The three bears they had were all active when I was there (about 10am on a 70-80 degree day, on hotter days they may be less active. This facility is wheel-chair accessible, the only stairs there are is to get to the upper viewing deck but you can see just fine from the lower deck.

This is a must-see in Ely!

Good attraction for the kids. Can see a few real bears and find out the facts about all bears in the exhibit inside the building.

“Excellent educational experience - and fun too!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2011

The North American Bear Center was one of the highlights of my recent trip to Ely. The Center is fantastic and provides an exceptional educational experience regarding bears. There is a focus on the black bear population native to Minnesota and a lot of video and materials relating to a specific clan of black bears currently being studied in the Tower/Soudan/Ely area.

In addition to the exhibits and videos, the Center also boasts three full-time black bear residents (Honey, Ted and Lucky) who live in a forrested two-acre enclosure. The back of the Center has indoor and outdoor viewing areas where you can watch the three bears when they appear to interact with the keepers, play or take a dip in the pond. Tip: Visit www.bear.org to access a web cam where you can also watch the bears online.

The Center also has a Cub room for the kids and a fully-stocked gift shop. This is an excellent facility and is not to be missed!

“Excellent Educational Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2010

Though this newer facility still needs a cash infusion to complete some solid exhibits, what it currently provides is an excellent oppurtunity to learn about bears and their habitats. Three bears with distinct personalities are the main attraction complete with a pond and waterfalls. Occassionally the little one plays with a ball there. The facility also offers bear interactions during the summer months that include three days of education and a up close and personal experience in their own environment.
This is one of the best attractions to complete your vacation experience in the beautiful Ely area.
