“Top entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

One new feature the restaurant offers is a PIANO BAR on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7-9 pm with acclaimed
entertainer IRENE HARTFIELD. A cozy and romantic setting upstairs of the restaurant with appetizers and wine make for a lovely evening; the addition of the marvelous voice and piano skills Irene offers, performing pop tunes and oldies, take the experience 'over the top' in this little town. Great fun for friends or a relaxed 'date-night' out!
Monthly art exhibits on the walls add to the ambience and expose another sense of the overall art experience happening in Ely!

I had the blueberry french toast and sausage - both of which were superb. Lovely atmosphere, good food. Worth a stop!

“New evening entertainment is worth a stop!”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

We just happened in on the newly opened upstairs where a woman sings and plays the piano in the evenings...at least during the weekend we were there. She is very good. It was a nice low key evening with a few very well chosen appetizers not usually found on most menus. We hope they continue to do this!

“Continuing to grow”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

The Taste of Ely is a somewhat recent addition to Ely. (Less than 1 year old)

It is a charming place in the location of the family's original grocery store. The walls contain images of Ely present and past. There are sealed tables that contain little gems and stories about local people and places. If you're lucky, there is a wall that hosts a video show of Ely-related pictures. (Otherwise, it is network news or something else not as interesting)

OK - on to the food....99% of the time, the food is WONDERFUL! They are the types of food and recipes that you're Mom would make and just as good, if not better. The menu contains a separate section for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Unfortunately, you have to order of the menu section that coinsides with current the time of day (no, breakfast at Noon).

Several weeks ago, I was there for lunch and ordered the French Dip. WOW - it was the BEST I'd ever had!! It contained chunks (not once frozen slices) of beef on a wonderful roll. Great for dipping and soaking up the au jus. MMMMMmmmmm. The following week, I was back again for another. The beef was still wonderful, but they had switched to a different ciabitta-style bread that more resembled cardboard than bread. Hopefully, they have changed back to the rolls!

I was there within the last week and ordered the Boarder Burger...I will say the it is best burger it is town. Quality beef, perfect temp, and the bun on the burger was excellent...(almost regretting not trying the french dip again)

So with the food under control, the next focus needs to be the service. Again, they are still new, however, some very basic front of house items were being overlooked.

There was no one to great people as they came in. People would look and wander around finally attempting to seat themselves. (The "Please Wait To Be Seated" sign in too small and oddly located on a half wall.

On this visit, EVERY table that was did not contain a customer, was covered with dirty dishes. (about a 30/70 split) They had obvisouly been there quite some time as it was well into lunch and all of the tables near us had plates with eggs and other breakfast food remaining.

Server priorities are either not trained or are being ignored. Several times I saw food waiting to be delivered. It would sit under the heat lamps for up to 8 minutes while the service staff was busy taking orders or talking to other tables....our food incuded.

There were tables trying to get the attention of their server, but unable to as their server was either on the upper level or busy with something else.

At one point, our server shouted to our table to ask if things were OK....she was about 15 feet away with nothing between us but dirty tables.

Overall, The Taste of Ely is going thru the normal growing pains all new restaurants experience. They have the food part figured out, hands down. (assuming they went back to the "good" french dip rolls)

What still needs work is easily trainable. It could be handled by an additional staff member or two who understands "Customer Service" and is able to keep control and direct the front of house priorities.

I will be returning to this charming restaurant and will be there to cheer for them on each step they take towards making themselves a superior place for consistantly great food and service.

Join me. :-)

“The most Amazing Food”
Reviewed December 7, 2012

Stopped in for breakfast one a.m. and didn't want to leave. Both breakfasts were homemade pieces of heaven - cooked with love. So Yummy! Loved the BW slideshow as well. Wish I had found this place sooner - it's tucked away on one of the side streets.
