My husband and I rented a villa at the resort. My husbands mother passed away 2 days before we were supposed to check in. Riverpoint Resort was completely unwilling to accomodate us, refund, or change our date (5 days later there were unrented cabins). I understand that their policy said there were no refunds but it also stated that they would try and accomodate if possible. Obviously they were not willing to work with us and did not even send a thank you card for the $2500 they just took from us. They apparently don't care about repeat business or word of mouth.

How does one prepare for the unexpected when going on vacation? In our busy and sometimes hectic lives, it is important that your vacation investment is not compromised due to an unexpected event that potentially can impact your vacation.

That is why traveler’s insurance is so beneficial, and at River Point Resort, we strongly suggest checking into it when making your travel plans. As stated on the “Reservation” page on River Point Resort’s website, and in the brochure information: “Travel insurance is available and may protect you against unexpected circumstances that may cause you to delay, interrupt or cancel your vacation due to circumstances beyond your control. (River Point does not sell travel insurance, but can recommend carriers.)”

Background Information: River Point Resort is a small 16 unit resort. Unlike large resort properties and hotels with hundreds of accommodations that are virtually identical with the same description and rate, a guest of River Point has the choice to rent a specific accommodation with a specific name, for a specific timeframe and specific amenities, a specific location on the property, and a specific rate. Once the accommodation is reserved, the Reservation is confirmed and the accommodation, date of choice, and rate is guaranteed.

Reservation charges, as is true at many, if not, most resorts and hotels, are prepaid in advance of arrival. (Many major hotels have a no refund policy for reservations cancelled two days prior to arrival.) In the rare instance that a cancellation occurs at River Point, and enough “lead time” exists, the cancelled reservation may re-rent to another guest, and money on account would be refunded, less a processing fee. It is important to note, that Ely, Minnesota and River Point Resort are destination areas, not drive-by areas, so a “last minute” cancellation of a reservation often does not re-rent.

In this particular case, the reviewer contacted RPR just two days prior to the confirmed arrival date of Saturday, July 14 with news of the need to cancel the reservation, which was guaranteed and held by River Point since February 17, 2012, when the reservation was made, and for which all had been prepaid in early May. The reviewer indicated that she totally understood the cancellation information, but asked if the reservation was transferable to other persons who might be able to take over the reservation.

Any reservation may be transferred to another party for the same dates of the original reservation. However, it is important to note, that the dates of the reservation cannot be changed, since River Point is a small property with limited accommodations, unlike larger properties with many accommodations.

The conversation ended with the reviewer stating that she was quite sure that the Villa she had rented would be occupied with others she knew, and that she would provide their names as soon as possible. There was never an “official” written cancellation of the reservation. No further communication was forthcoming from the reviewer prior to the reservation arrival date of Tuesday, July 10, with information that another party would take over the reservation, nor was there any written communication indicating a ”for sure” cancellation.

Unfortunately, the accommodation remained empty for the dates of July 10-14, and in essence, this was considered a “no show” reservation. Several days later a phone call was received from a gentleman, who wanted to know what availability existed for another cabin, called Riverview, into the next week or so. Steve, co-owner of River Point, spoke with the gentleman and told him that the cabin was uncommitted. The gentleman then identified that he was the reviewer’s husband, and that he wanted to take the Riverview cabin in lieu of the Villa that he had rented for the July 10-14 timeframe.

Steve endeavored to explain that, even though the Riverview Cabin (much higher rate) was available, it was not possible to simply move the reservation of July 10-14 into this new timeframe, as the timeframe for his original reservation had passed by. Before Steve was able to proceed further, with some possible positive suggestions to the situation, the reviewer’s husband abruptly hung up the phone, ending any further dialogue.

It is obvious that a refund would not be forthcoming, since River Point had upheld all parts of the guaranteed reservation for the confirmed dates and accommodation choice of this reviewer. It is most unfortunate that events in the life of the reviewer caused them to miss out on their vacation and to incur the financial obligation for the reservation. However, the option of transferring the reservation to another party for the travel dates reserved was encouraged, a willingness to engage in a congenial dialogue was made…but was rebuffed, and traveler’s insurance had been recommended as a method to ease the stress of unexpected events that could potentially impact the reviewer’s reservation.

Debra and I stayed in the "Riverview" the third week of June. Our purpose of traveling up north is to remove ourselves from the demanding and hectic work / life enviroment around Chicago.
No TV,radio, cell phones email, brought a laptop to access weather forecasts only.
Over many years of being up north on and off, the previous resorts always left me looking for somewhat better. No longer! The owners Steve and Jane bring decades of experience and a commiment to the hard work it takes to provide their guests an opportunity to have an exemplary experience in the north woods. The young energetic staff was attentive to requests,
and were visably busy all day long maintaining the manicured ambience of the property, and providing entertainment to the guests with children.
The cabin..... quality, decore, luxury, comfort, cleanliness, rivals any leased vacation home I have visited anywhere in the country. Not to be found anywhere else in the area in my experience.
Meeting the owners Steve and Jane was a joy, detail oriented, personable, open, commited to the north, and their guests. I am looking forward to enjoying the experience and hospitality that Steve and Jane provide next year!

My wife and I stayed here last week to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. I made arrangements relatively late and lucked out in finding a few days open for the Wind Song Chalet. We couldn't have made a better choice.

We found everything at the resort to be very well kept. The chalet itself was built with quality and seemed almost new yet. We loved having the full kitchen to cook, the grill outside was very convenient, and sitting on the deck and hearing nothing but the birds singing was a treat. We were amazed that the chalet was stocked with everything we needed. Best of all, the resort was so peaceful. Even though we were only there for a few days, time seemed to slow down.

We took time to go golfing in Ely, took a few trails in the area, went canoeing along with a little fishing, shopped in town, and in general just had a great relaxing time. We felt very welcome and everyone was very helpful.

We will definitely keep Riverpoint Resort on our "short list" of places that we want to return to when we are looking to travel to this area again.

All of us at River Point Resort are happy that you found the Windsong Chalet to be perfect for your special 20th anniversary getaway. The Chalets are very new, extremely comfortable, and have so many lovely designer touches throughout, along with many amenities that everything you need is, indeed, at your fingertips. Happy, too, that you felt welcome...because you surely were! Thanks for keeping River Point Resort, as you say...on your "short list" of resorts to return to! Much appreciated, and thank you for taking the time to comment about your experience at our North Woods resort.

Nancy and I had fallen in love with the Ely area several years ago, and we were looking for our perfect place. As we were heading out of town to Lake Superior one summer, she spotted a sign pointing into the forest that read "River Point Resort 1.5 miles". I'm so glad that we turned down that road because we found that perferct place at the end of it.
Nestled in the deep woods on the shores of Birch Lake is a resport that has been operated by the same familty for half a century. It is so well kept that it looks like it was built yesterday.
Any type of accomadation that you could wish for is there. We chose a beautiful one bedroom cabin with its own dock on a flat piece of ground beautifully secluded in the trees. There is a nice screened in porch, complete with wicker furniture, a table, even a lamp to read by at night.
The owners are wonderful. They leave you to yourselves while at the same time provide excellent service. You can be as involved or uninvolved as you wish in activities.
Miles of hiking trails and an undeveloped 800 acre lake are there for you to explore.
I've never slept better and I told Jane that Nancy and I will come back every year.
One night, a full moon rose over that dark lake. As we watched it rise from our deck, I knew that life was perfect.
Out of five stars, we give River Point all of thoes in the endless Northern sky.

We are so happy, too, that Nancy spotted our sign on highway #1 and you turned onto River Point Road several years ago to check out our resort…because we have surely loved having you as our guests for the past two years, and look forward to year number three this June. The one-bedroom Hideaway Cabin with level ground right to the water along with the handy private dock makes for an excellent choice. So happy that you have enjoyed the hiking trail on the property, also. You might be interested to know that our winter staff has been busy clearing the brush and dead trees from the trail area the past few weeks which helps to open up more beautiful vistas to the lake and allows for the white pine seedlings to grow quickly. Thank you, thank you…for the better than five star rating…wow!

We just came home Monday from a 3-night stay for our 23rd wedding anniversary. I can honestly tell you we received nothing but gracious attention from Jane (the owner) and everyone else we encountered here. Our cabin was "The Point" and it had the privacy we wanted, a beautiful view of the water, a very nice screen porch and deck from which to enjoy the sounds and sights, and a nicely equipped kitchen. I should add the cabin was absolutely spotless.

There is so much to see and do here, one could never be bored. The Trail of Reflections is a nice little hike. The grounds are so beautiful and a joy to walk around, I could picture lounging on a chair enjoying warm summer breezes at the beach. Oh, and there were books and a cribbage board in our cabin. We loved playing cribbage in the evening while listening to the radio. So relaxing. We rented one of their pontoons for the day so we could do a little fishing and sight-seeing on the lake. It was pretty cold and windy that day so we were only out for 4 or 5 hours. When my husband returned the boat, Jane told him we could take it out for the rest of our hours the next day if we wished! This was completely unsolicited and is an example of how eager to please these people really are.

Ely is an interesting town with plenty restaurants, shops, and bars to keep you entertained when the weather is less than cooperative for the numerous outdoor activities available. I believe there were two grocery stores in town as well, perfect for picking up your items for cooking in the cabin. The drive from the resort to town is only about 10 minutes and one you are sure to enjoy.

We had stayed at this resort about 15 years ago and I never forgot River Point after all that time. I always knew when we next returned to Ely that we would stay here again and now I know it will be our destination the next time!

Room Tip: I don't think you could miss with any room. All have excellent views!

It was definitely our pleasure to have you as our guests once again. Whenever you need a little mental “sojourn” from your day at work you can remember “The Point” cabin with its panoramic lake views from the screen porch and sundeck and the wooded forest surrounding it…the perfect place to “enjoy the sounds and sights” of nature, sit back, and relax. We value your sincere comments and are so happy that your special 23rd anniversary was a lovely celebration for both of you. All of the staff, and Steve, James, and I are most appreciative that you selected River Point Resort for your fall getaway and that you had a great time!
