“Clean, Well Managed, Beautiful Setting - We're Returning!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2011

First time vacationers to River Point Resort. You will notice immediately that the owners operate the resort with immense pride. During our week alone we noticed continual improvements being made to the property- staining, brush removal, carpentry work, and constant cleaning. It is incredibly well maintained. There is a staff of college students that are hard working and very friendly. They bring a vitality to the place that we enjoyed a lot, especially when you bring kids. The staff will help you with most anything...even to provide fishing tips.

Our cabin "The Point", was very small, but it suited a family of four just fine, and the setting on the peninsula is beautiful. The cabins were far enough apart to provide privacy, but close enough to access the lodge, boat, car, etc. The lay-out is very nice.

The location on Birch lake is as advertised, but don't expect to jump into a canoe and reach the boundry waters. The lake is long and the boundry waters start several miles away. We rented a small boat/motor from the resort, which was a great investment for fishing especially, but also to sightsee.

Be aware that there are many extras to spend on at the resort- guided fishing, boat rental, guided canoe trip to boundry waters, float plane ride, etc. We only did the guided canoe trip, and it was well worth it. The setting was stunning and the guide was excellent.

I can't explain some of the negative reviews of this resort. I consider myself pretty particular, and it perfectly met my family's expectations.

Room Tip: The Point is small cabin, sleeps 4, but with a beautiful view. Highly recommend for two adults and...

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind words about your family vacation at River Point Resort. We are so happy that the beautiful and private lakefront setting of the “The Point” cabin fit your family perfectly. Thank you again! Everyone on staff enjoyed getting to know you, and your wife, and your two children. Sharing the day on your guided canoe trip into Hegman Lake in the amazing wilderness of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area with the other family of four was a super adventure for all of you, and the guide loved it, too! Those new-found canoeing muscles, that were a bit sore the next day, were surely worth the experience! Looking forward to your return visit!

After reading the lastest review (same week we stayed at River Point), I could only think of the words of the great philospher Rosanne Rosannadanna (Gilder Rader) "It Just Goes To Show You, It's Always Something". That said, no matter how much you try and how well you do things, you just can't please everyone.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so here's mine.

My family and I have made multplte trips to the Ely area over the past 25 years. Without question River Point Resort was the best. Cabins were large and clean, the grounds were kept in pristine condition, easy access to everything. The owners, Jane and Steve and their attentive staff was always available to help make your stay comfortable. The staff at River Point was a breath of fresh air, young, energetic, friendly and very hard working. Never once complained about anything, always greeted you with smiles and a caring attitude. Congrats to Jane and Steve for finding these well rounded individuals, they seem to love what they are doing.

My family is not any different from most familes when it comes to spending money. However, we have learned, you get what you pay for. If you looking to save pennies, live on a shoe string budget this may not be the place for you. We searched every resort in the area for this trip and found many that were less expensive (we have stayed at a few), but the accomodations did not meet our needs. Our decision proved beyond a shawdow of doubt, it was the right one.

By far, the peaceful location and surroundings was the best part of our trip. My family came together to reconnect and enjoy each other without distractions and the hussle of our everyday lives, this was a mission that was accomplished ten fold, thanks to River Point Resort for making our time together memorable.

Kind Regards
Mike, Sue McGatha & family

Much gratitude for selecting our resort property for your family.

Not worth the price, they had someone working on the A/C in our unit during our stay. No apologies or warning. Even had a worker outside our bedroom window as my wife was changing. Owners response to this complaint was "I'm sure he wasn't looking"

A similar response to this review was sent on July 14, 2011, but was not posted. Thus, it is being sent again.

Background Information: Air conditioning was scheduled to be installed in the Aspenwood Villa that this reviewer had rented prior to their July vacation. But, due to shortages with some of the components, as a result of the disaster in Japan this spring where most A/C units are made, there was a delay in the receipt of such. The parts arrived on July 5, and a professional electrician performed the necessary installation that day. This reviewer had rented a boat and motor for the same day, and, thus, was on the lake for the majority of the time it took for the electrician to complete the small installation project. Sincere apologies were given for the short time that the electrician worked on the A/C unit outside of their villa when they returned from boating later in the afternoon. The hope was that they might understand the circumstances and be a bit more flexible. (Note: The professional electrician mentioned that he had pleasant dialogue with the guests, and was even offered some of their barbeque dinner during the short time it took him to complete the project upon their return from boating.) There was no water issue in their accommodation, as referenced elsewhere. A reverse osmosis water treatment system is in this villa (and other accommodations) which offers purified drinking water, simply by lifting up a small, slender handle. Perhaps, this reviewer, either did not identify the small spigot on the sink as the one to use for drinking water, and/or did not read the related information conveniently located in the accommodation.

Following is the content of a follow up letter sent to this reviewer prior to notification that a review had been placed on this site: “Thank you for being our canoeing and resorting guests beginning on July 2. We trust that you had a good time, as did your guide on your overnight canoe trip into the Boundary Waters. I am most apologetic about the inconvenience you experienced by a professional electrician, who completed the installation of the new A/C equipment into your villa, Aspenwood Villa, on Tuesday, July 5. He attempted to complete most of job while you and your family were on the lake in the boat you had rented for the day. However, I do understand your need for privacy upon your return when he was still finishing the task. For that, I am most sorry.

As a token of my appreciation of your understanding and consideration regarding such, your account has not been charged for the boat/motor rental of $95 on July 5, or the associated small charges for life jackets, boat cushions, and gas used in the amount of $15.75. Hope that your family enjoyed the Wisconsin Dells as the next part of your vacation, and that all went well for you. Thank you once again!”

If River Point Resort, was a property that was in the category of a “nickel and dime” type of place, as this reviewer writes, then surely a boat with motor, plus gas and the extra items indicated would have not been freely given in an effort to show that the apology was sincere. Furthermore, all lodging rental rates and marina rental rates are clearly published on the website for ease in calculating in advance of making a reservation exactly what a trip would cost. Complete and honest rate transparency is quite evident. Perhaps this reviewer should not have selected River Point as their vacation destination, as there are many other properties to select from may have more appropriately fit their budget. However, all on staff wish them well in their future vacations.

This was my 1st visit "up north" with my husband and some friends. 4 of us stayed in a 3 bedroom cabin called "Secluded Shores".The cabin was very nice and roomy with a screened in porch and a large deck with a gas grill. The kitchen had most everything a person would need to cook with, except maybe a good pan for making pancakes. The bedrooms had a place to hang clothes and chests of drawers . The beds were comfy.

We stayed at Riverpoint before the official tourist season opened so it was pretty quiet. The owners were still doing a lot of prep work to get ready for Memorial weekend. Our cabin was fairly secluded with one other cabin nearby but not too close. We had a nice view of the lake. It was a short downhill walk to the boat dock and beach. The loons called every night and the bird watching was great! We rented a pontoon one day to fish and sight-see. There is a nature trail right on the resort but it needs some clean up. We got off the path and had to bush-whack our way back to the road!

Our hosts were very helpful with any of our questions. They suggested a few places that we might want to hike and places to see near Ely. Cell phone usage was hit or miss for us. If we stood in the right place on higher ground we had pretty good reception. We also used the free Wi-fi near the office.

I would stay here again given the chance.

Very happy to know that your first visit to River Point with your friends, who have been here before, was pleasant and that you would return again. Thank you! You are right about the birding, especially in the spring of the year. There is quite an amazing variety of birds to observe and hear. Getting up early in the morning to hear and see them is truly worth it.

This summer will mark our 9th summer at River Point – our kids have grown up looking forward to coming back to the same cabin year after year, rekindling memories of summers past and creating new ones. It is like our home away from home for one week each summer.

We love the Ely area and set out on a search for a resort that was quiet, family friendly, and embodied the Ely wilderness feel. After visiting many resorts, we found exactly what we were looking for at River Point Resort.

Steve, Jane and James have created an atmosphere where you can get away from it all. No phones, no TV, no distractions to having family time together in the great outdoors with cozy accommodations. They are gracious hosts, giving you your privacy, yet always available to help should you need anything.

The lake is quiet with little boat traffic, which makes it perfect for quiet paddles in the canoe. We all love the hiking, boating and fishing, and days just hanging out at the beach relaxing, swimming and playing tether ball. The star gazing is fabulous – one year we saw the northern lights right from our boat dock. Looking forward to another summer vacation at River Point!

The "Log Cabin" and River Point Resort has indeed been, as you say...your home away from home for one week each summer. Watching your two children, who were very young when you first came to River Point nine years ago, grow up into friendly, polite, and engaging young people, both with quick and happy smiles, has truly been a delight. Thanks for giving us the memories! The wilderness and water surrounding our secluded peninsula is magnificent, and viewing the stars and capturing a rare glimpse of the northern lights is something to behold. We await your return visit! Thank you for so many wonderful years of being our cherished guests.

Thank you so much for your great comments, Marc and Sue. All of us at River Point enjoyed getting to know you last June when you vacationed in Birchcliff Villa. Steve, James, staff, and I are happy that you loved our incredible lakefront setting on Birch Lake and the comfort and cleanliness of your accommodation. Look forward to enjoying two new bonfire areas, a new water raft, A/C, and more when you return this season. Everything will feel very familiar…exciting and fun. Can’t wait to greet you again!

We felt like we were a burden. Simple requests like “can you recommend a place to eat in town” were met with heavy sighs. The grounds are pretty but the accommodation is of poor quality. Drains not draining, no/few towels and a disinterested staff really spoiled an otherwise great trip. Once in town we met the great people of Ely and everyone was helpful, kind and fun. Maybe these folks have been in the hospitality business too long but just about everyone working at River Point seemed to hate what they were doing and viewed the guests as a nuisance. If you avoid this outfitter you will avoid the only negative experiences we had in a week in wonderful Ely, MN.

We value your feedback and do apologize for all on staff for not paying closer attention to your needs while a guest at our facility. It is most unfortunate that you perceived that the staff viewed you “as a nuisance”, and for that we are truly sorry. More information will be added to our present flyers and handouts outlining in even greater detail all the restaurant and cafes to enjoy in downtown Ely so that it is at our guest’s fingertips, for greater ease in making dining choices.
The drain that did not drain in the accommodation you rented was, unfortunately, filled with hair as is quite common. Mentioning this in the Office during your stay or filling out the convenient “Maintenance & Repair” form found within the "Guest Notebook" lying on your accommodation’s kitchen table, and then turning it in at Wildwood Lodge, the Office, or passing it along to any staff person, as suggested on the “Maintenance” form, would have been appreciated. Maintenance staff would have been dispatched to your accommodation, at your convenience, to correct the situation and make your vacation more pleasant. This type of maintenance is a most simple “fix”. By not reporting this inconvenience while you were here did not offer us the opportunity to “make it right” for you during your stay.
Towels: River Point is a housekeeping resort, which means that you are renting a completely furnished and fully equipped accommodation with a kitchen. You provide your own food; cook your meals, etc. You bring your own bath/kitchen towels, including pot holders for oven cooking/baking for rentals of two or more nights. Bath and kitchen towel sets are provided when renting just an overnight stay. A convenient Guest Laundromat is also onsite. Should you have desired additional toweling, a request for such would have been honored immediately.
More information on this and other helpful topics can be found on the “Frequently Asked Questions” on the website. Again, we appreciate and respect your feedback.
