“First Class”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2009

My husband and I stayed at the A.G Thomson House on Monday, March 2, 2009. We saved some money on the Lake Superior Suite since we booked during the Winter and during the week. The Suite was top-notch. Tim and Angie did a wonderful job converting the room from an old Carriage House into a luxurious retreat. We added the in-room champagne and cheese/cracker tray, which was waiting for us upon our arrival. We enjoyed relaxing in the large whirlpool tub and sitting by the warm fire (not to mention the toasty heated floors).

We were a bit disappointed in our entertainment and dinner options -- since it was the "off season", many of the nicer restaurants weren't open or had limited hours. We did, however, enjoy a late dinner at Pickwick (if you go there, ask to be seated in the dining room by the large window). Also, there wasn't much to do around town (we made the best of it, and did have nice lunch the following day at Fitgers Pub). We are considering visiting Duluth again this summer when there are more events and places to enjoy.

Breakfast in the main house was superb -- the best we've ever had! We were the only guests at the time, so we were able to have a late breakfast and enjoy the dining room all to ourselves.

Tim and Angie are excellent hosts and we were impressed by their remodeling and decorating skills. During the house tour, Tim told the story about the secret "booze making room" (during the Prohibition days) underneath the porch floor. Maybe next time we visit, we'll be able to sneak a peek ;-)

My wife and I just got home after spending three nights at our new favorite bed and breakfast; A.G. Thomson House.

We stayed in the Lake Superior Suite, which is actually the main floor of the old Carriage House. With a very comfortable king sized bed, two-person whirlpool tub, thermostat controlled gas fireplace, heated floors (also thermostat controlled), flat screen TV with built in DVD player, and a kitchenette with a microwave oven, dishwasher and sink, we had everything we needed. Add to all of that a spacious bathroom with stand-up shower and thick towels, and it was even more wonderful. We could have easily stayed in our room the entire weekend without missing a thing.

Tim and Angie, the owners of the house, are wonderfully friendly and thoughtful, and they took such good care of us. They welcomed us like old friends, and every time we saw them we had great conversations with lots of laughter. They are extremely professional, but not cold or aloof. When we left, they made us feel like they were genuinely glad that we stayed with them, and would be welcome back anytime.

The first morning we decided to have breakfast brought to our room, and although that little extra carries a small charge, the food made it well worth every penny. Angie's homemade white chocolate and cranberry scones, combined with very good locally roasted coffee, made a perfect start to a great breakfast. After breakfast and a nap, Tim gave us a tour of all but one of the rooms in the main house. All I can say is Wow! Wonderfully decorated without being overdone, the rooms were spacious and comfortable, with fabulous two-person tubs in every room. Tim even showed us a suite that is under currently being renovated (the Ryerson Suite, I believe), and with the amazing attached porch off that room, I predict it will be in constant demand once the work is complete. Some rooms even have views of Lake Superior.

The last two mornings of our stay we ate breakfast in the main house, and again the food was excellent, as was the company of the other guests. Although there was no pressure to find things to talk about, we had very easy and interesting conversations with the other guests -- making the mornings that much more enjoyable.

With some great dining and sight-seeing options within easy driving distance, A.G. Thomson house is in a great locale that is easy to find, with easy access to Highway 61 or I-35. If you want to see some great Minnesota history, the Glensheen mansion is just minutes away from the B&B. For dining, we had dinner one night at the New Scenic Cafe, about eight miles out of Duluth on scenic 61, and it was wonderful. On another evening we decided to eat in the room while we watched the Academy Awards, and Blackwoods had good B-B-Q ribs with potato and baked beans ready in just 20 minutes.

We simply can't say enough good things about the A.G. Thomson House. We haven't even been home for 24 hours and we're literally already planning our next trip up for our 15th anniversary in June. We can't wait to stay in the house and see Tim and Angie again.

Do yourself a favor, and find a reason to stay at the A.G. Thomson house. You won't be disappointed!

My boyfriend and I stayed in Jan to get away from the city for a couple of days. Cannot begin to explain how much of a wonderful time we had at AG Thompson House. Tim and Angie were great hosts, their home is fantastic, the food was great, the bed was amazing, and the tub the TUB in the Hewitt Suite is incredible. They gave us loads of advice on what to do in Duluth, but the inn was so nice we just went out for dinner and spent the days relaxing in our room. Highly recommended.

This B&B is AMAZING! The moment we arrived Tim & Angie were outside greeting us and offering to help carry our bags to the room. Our suite was spacious and sooooo comfortable....we especially enjoyed the whirlpool for two!

Angie's breakfasts were to die for and she was kind enough to share some of her delicious recipes. The evening wine shared with the hosts and our fellow guests was a great way to end the day....and we loved the homemade cookies baked fresh each day.

Our weekend spent at the Thomson House was a great way to celebrate our 6th anniversary. We've stayed at several of the other B&Bs in Duluth and I think we're now done "shopping around". We'll definitely return and are already making plans for a summer return.

From their first friendly greeting in the parking lot to their delicious breakfasts in the morning, Angie and Tim are unsurpassed in welcoming guests and making them feel at home right away. They were helpful without being overbearing, available when needed, and found all kinds of extra touches to show how much they cared. They offered to help with our luggage, made dinner reservations for us, shared their delightfully varied book/magazine/DVD collection, and met our every need. As co-conspirators in suprising my wife with flowers, cheese, wine, and chocolates, they made an early Valentine's Day celebration even more memorable. They have a very evident passion for making their inn inviting and beautiful, adding their own personal touches to the simply elegant décor. The house and the grounds were a perfect backdrop for a romantic weekend wrapped in comfort. We loved the early morning sunrise over Lake Superior, as well as the full moon rising in the evening. What a perfect location, and an unforgettable experience! We will definitely return! J & J, Minneapolis, MN

The AG Thomson house was fantastic from beginning to end. From Angie's prompt responses to e-mails as I tried to finalize details without my wife's knowledge to the tour of the other rooms in the house the whole experience was great. The owner's take a lot of pride in their B&B and it shows. The food was great, and the atmosphere was wonderful. I would recommend this B&B to anyone looking for a getaway. I highly recommend the Lake Superior Suite. It is newly renovated, extremely relaxing, and the heated floors is the icing on the cake. We will be back!
