This hotel is one of 4 or 5 hotels right on Lake Superior in the Canal Park area. From our balcony facing the water and the boardwalk, we could see ships go through the aeriel lift and all manner of people walking or biking by. Canal Park with its restaurants, and shops was right out the door. Our room was very clean, quite large, and came equipped with a fridge, microwave and wet bar, sitting area and balcony. Breakfast was very good, and there was quite a bit of variety from day to day. We didn't use the pool, but the gym was above average. Staff were very friendly and professional.
The reason I didn't give this hotel 5 stars was that there were a few negatives. The breakfast area was far too small to accomodate guests (when the hotel is full). Getting a seat every day was a real chore and many of the tables were quite close together. Secondly, our room had a faint, but very distinctive smell of smoke, even though the whole hotel is nonsmoking and we signed a pledge when checking in that we would not be smoking. Despites these minor negatives, this is a great place to stay and we would definently go back..

Room Tip: The extra cost for a balcony room is definently worth it!

Thanks so much for your review! I'm glad to hear that you were able to enjoy your time with us. We appreciate your feedback regarding our breakfast area. We are always looking for ways to improve the flow of lines, though with a full house it can be difficult. I do apologize for you having to search out a place to sit. We do offer overflow seating in our meeting room, and try to make the outdoor patio available on nice mornings as well. Our hotel is 100% smoke free, and I'm sorry that you encountered an odor of cigarettes in your room. That is certainly not the impression that we want you to leave with! We do charge $150 for smoking in our guest rooms, and do our best to enforce this policy. Please notify our front desk staff immediately should you ever experience something like that again. Again, thanks for your comments, and we look forward to seeing you on your return visit!

I couldn't stop smiling at how convenient this hotel was located to everything we wanted! We usually stay somewhere and have to drive into Canal Park - it was a splurge, but I was so pleased with being able to walk out the doors of our hotel and be in Canal Park! We walked to Grandma's, the Art Show, the Vista Fleet Tours, the cafe, shopping!!! Didn't worry about parking! I would go back in a heartbeat! I read the reviews about the older portion of the hotel (where we stayed) and thought it was just fine and very nice. Elevators were plenty fast - and room was very clean and comfy with fridge, microwave, etc. Thank you for a great stay, can't wait to come back!

Thanks so much for sharing your review. I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. I agree with you completely--our location can't be beat, and avoiding the hassle of finding parking in Canal Park is definitely helpful. I appreciate your comments about our older portion of the hotel; we have a major renovation coming up this fall and winter to upgrade the rooms on this side of hotel and really look forward to showing them off when they are completed! Thanks again for your comments, come back and visit us again soon!

Stayed on a Sunday night and cost was just under $200 for a small suite. Nice hotel with an excellent breakfast. Bedroom was large and it was nice to have plug-ins on the lamps instead of having to search for an outlet to plug in phones. Location is excellent as Canal Park is an excellent jumping-off spot from which to tour Duluth.

Room Tip: Decide whether you want lakeside or cityside.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed your time with us, and were able to enjoy our breakfast! We do run various promotions and deals throughout the year regarding the rates. I’d recommend checking out VisitDuluth.com, and clicking on their “hot deals” link at the top of the page. This is a great resource for upcoming events also! Please let me know if I can help you out with any future travel plans to Duluth. We hope to see you again, soon!

We stayed here for two nights. We have stayed here before but it has been a few years and were glad we came back. We were booked, by chance, in the newer portion of the hotel and it was an improvement, nice, spacious and clean. The best part of the stay was the breakfast in the morning, hot food as well as the usual make your own waffles, yogurt, toast, fruit. Staff was friendly. Only complaint was the the second day were were there, we needed the room by 1:30 pm to get ready for an afternoon event. We left early and didn't get back till after lunch to give the cleaning staff time to clean. By 2:00, room still wasn't clean and I had to flag down a staff member who told me my cleaning person was on break and she would tell her to do our room next. Which she did and was apologetic. This was partly our fault as I didn't know their cleaning schedule, next time I'll let them know ahead of time. Just thought that they were cleaning the rooms on our floor when we left right after breakfast and I figured they would be done by the afternoon.

Thank you for sharing your review with us. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed our newer balcony suites and breakfast! I’m sorry to hear that your room was not cleaned as early as you needed, however. Please don’t hesitate to contact our front desk staff to arrange a time that works best with your schedule, and we can pass the request on to housekeeping, no problem. We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit!

Staff were really friendly. The rooms were clean. Great location. My only complaint was that it was loud. Some of the noise was due to the paper thin walls and the fact our room was right next to the elevator and ice machine. I don't think I would have noticed as much if it wouldn't have been for the kids (and adults) shouting and running up and down the halls. I can't blame the hotel for the bad manners of others. The breakfast was good. The area where they have it is quite large so you don't feel like you are packed in like sardines.

Our family stayed here for 3 nights in July. We stayed in the newer portion of the hotel after recommendations from other viewers that those rooms are quieter. We were very pleased with our room & hotel selection! It was very clean (top priority!), quiet (other than the ships coming & going, of course), offered wonderful views of the lake, the ships, & the boardwalk from the balcony, free breakfast, beautiful gazebo on the front of the hotel, patio seating in back, friendly staff, & is walking distance to so many restaurants & activities in Canal Park! While there is an arcade room for the kids & a swimming pool as well, both are quite small and the pool had tons of chlorine. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay & all there is to do right there without having to drive! We rode the bikes next door, took a horse-drawn carriage ride one evening, walked out on the Pier, climbed on the rocks, strolled through gift shops (pretty pricey!), and just relaxed.

Restaurant recommendations: GRIZZLY'S! The whole place smelled awesome & the fire-roasted chicken entrees were delish! I've been craving it since we left! Also, GRANDMA'S (right across the street) has a good walleye sandwich. CARIBOU & DQ down the street for your caffeine boost & sweet tooth. Oh, can't forget ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHOCOLATE FACTORY for yummy fudge & other treats! :)
*Avoid India Palace in the downtown area -- they really put Indian food to shame & the service is poor!

Don't hesitate to book here. I'm sure you will be just as pleased as we were! We look forward to staying here again in the near future! :)
