“Great addition to Canal Park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2007

This is a lovely new hotel that replaces the budget (and dumpy) Park Inn. It is a little farther from the canal than the other hotels, but it is still a short walk to everything in the Canal Park area. As others have noted, the hotel is beautifully appointed. The rooms are nice sized with REAL art on the walls. I also liked the fact that the top of the windows (kind of small windows, for a lake view) open allowing you to hear the sounds of the lake all night. One thing they hadn't ironed out when I was there was the wireless internet connection -- in some (many?) rooms you have to stand in the hall to make the connection, although you usually can hold on to it to work in the room. Just grab a cable when you check in and save yourself the trouble. It isn't budget lodging, but it isn't overpriced for what you get either. (And spring for the lake view -- it isn't that much more!) I will stay here again.

  • Liked — Beautiful hotel in a good location right on Lake Superior
  • Disliked — Internet was iffy without a cable

The Canal Park Lodge is a new hotel that just opened in the Canal Park area of Duluth. They demolished an older property and built this craftsman style Inn. Rooms were large and beautifully furnished including fridge, microwave and flat screen TV. Ours was a King with a balcony which I would recommend for enjoying the view of the adjacent Lake Superior. The continental breakfast was staffed by 3 or 4 people who made sure that there was plenty of everything including waffles, eggs, breakfast meat and the usual cereals, breads, juices, coffees, etc. The pool was large and immaculate. The lobby area housed the breakfast room, a front sitting area with 2 computer stations, a large area to the rear housed leather sofas, chairs and flat screen TV.

Since the hotel is new it is extremely clean and fresh.

There are 4 or 5 other hotels in Canal Park and if you call the Canal Park Lodge you can negotiate very fair rate.

If you go their website the photos and descriptions are very accurate.

This is a lovely family-friendly new hotel right in Canal Park on the shore of Lake Superior. The back door of the hotel opens directly onto a lovely boardwalk and running/walking path that runs along the lakefront. The faux-lodge look of the lobby is done quite nicely and the rooms are spacious, albeit typical, rooms. Our room included a small refrigerator (without freezer compartment), microwave, coffee maker, and one of the best hotel hairdryers I've ever used! Many of the rooms have balconies or lakefront views; ours did not. The room was clean and beds extremely comfortable. The hotel was exceptionally quiet, always a plus in a family-type environment such as this. Our only complaints about the room were the lack of freezer section in the fridge and the shower. While the pressure was excellent, the temperature fluctuated tremendously throughout the shower. This is inexcusable in a new property such as this.

The expanded self-serve continental breakfast was acceptable for any eaters who are not terribly selective about what they put into their bodies. The majority of the guests seemed to enjoy themselves, judging from the copious amounts of food on most of their plates. There were the standard make-your-own waffles, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, various muffins, and english muffins, 2 types of juice, and several carafes of Caribou coffee. Unfortunately, the coffee was often empty and there were no decaffeinated tea bags offered. The eggs appeared to be pre-formed and looked like those that are served on Egg McMuffins and those types of things and I saw numerous guests making their own variations of that dish with what to me were the less than appetizing eggs, sausage, and bacon available on the hot buffet.

This hotel had a small workout room directly across the hall from our room. It was clean and the equipment was in good working order. There were several public seating areas with comfortable leather chairs, flat-screen tvs, and views of the lake. We didn't use the hotel's indoor pool but were told by several people that it was fun for the kids!

I realize that in a location such as Duluth the tourist season is a short one so the hotels and restaurants need to make their money when they can. Our AAA rate of just over $200/night for a standard non-lakeview room seemed a bit high to us. However, the location and views were excellent, parking free, and everything we wanted to do within walking distance so that is worth something.
