Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Finished in 1908, this Lake Superior 39-room mansion enjoys a rare, intact collection of original furnishings and art. Because of that, it closely resembles the days when the Congdon family first occupied it. Truly, it is Duluth's answer to Downton Abbey. Situated on a wooded lot, the home boasts spectacular views of Lake Superior, as well as, multiple gardens including formal, flower and vegetable. Guests are also encouraged to explore the carriage house, boat house, stone bridge and pier. Children enjoy the pebbled beach for hours of rock skipping while parents take in a sit on one of Adirondack chairs. Be sure to check out Glensheen as part of your must-do Duluth bucket list.

We took the extended tour of the mansion - well worth the $26 price tag! The tour did require lots of walking - but what a house! It was interesting seeing all the detail that the Congdons went to when planning their estate. It was even more amazing that most of the interior had survived with little alteration. Definitely worth the visit!!!

We toured this estate recently and really enjoyed it. Learning the history was great and the decor is very interesting. It's right on the lake and the grounds are lovely.

I loved my first visits to the mansion, where I learned a lot about the art styles used in decorating. This tour was interesting enough and highlighted elements of each room. I was felt like there was a more limited access and was rather surprised at the damp odor of the basement and at the sight of all the event tables and folding chairs on the lower level patio. I suspect that UMD has to do all it can to afford maintaining the place.

Glensheen is a fabulous place to tour. It's rare to find a place like this that is still filled with furniture and decor that is 90% original to the house! The docent/tour guide we had was very good. We did the "Extended Tour" that included the third floor and the attic. I would recommend that if you go. Might as well see the entire thing while you're there. I just finished watching season one and two of Downton Abbey, and it was really interesting to make comparison. The house is from the same time period as the show, and you get to see the kitchens and servants' quarters as well as how the family lived. Glensheen is a definite must-see in Duluth.

The place is mindboggling. The technology built in was way ahead of the 1905 times. The present day cost has to be astronomical. A $mil custom made Steinway and many more priceless antiques. Wow!
