Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Finished in 1908, this Lake Superior 39-room mansion enjoys a rare, intact collection of original furnishings and art. Because of that, it closely resembles the days when the Congdon family first occupied it. Truly, it is Duluth's answer to Downton Abbey. Situated on a wooded lot, the home boasts spectacular views of Lake Superior, as well as, multiple gardens including formal, flower and vegetable. Guests are also encouraged to explore the carriage house, boat house, stone bridge and pier. Children enjoy the pebbled beach for hours of rock skipping while parents take in a sit on one of Adirondack chairs. Be sure to check out Glensheen as part of your must-do Duluth bucket list.

“Beautiful estate and informative tour”
Reviewed January 16, 2012

Excellent tour. A trip to Duluth should include a tour of The Glenshern Estate. It was a unique way to learn about the history of Duluth as well as to see a uniquely beautiful home. While I did not have kids, they tour provided fun, interactive ways for the children of my group to learn and be excited about the tour. All of my questions were answered. I would love to go again especially in the summer when the flowers are in bloom.

Any one spending any time in Duluth needs to spend a few bucks and see the Glensheen! We spent a fabulous evening experiencing the Mozart opera Barber of Seville! We followed the cast and orchestra from one room to the next as the opera progressed, ending on the balcony under the light of the full moon over lake Superior! This was a few years ago and I still feel the thrill when I think of it! We've also toured the house several times, always learning and seeing something for the first time. Last summer we went to the art fair on the grounds. On a different trip we toured the house then walked down to the shore to watch the tall ships appear on the horizon on their way to Duluth harbor. Every trip is magical!

I love the tours here. Especially around Christmas when it's all decked out for the season. Summer is also a prime time when you can tour the entire grounds at your own leisure.
