A yummy ice cream treat with a view that can't be beat. Open April through October, right off the Lakewalk trail. Popular tiny historic refurbished gas station turned ice cream shop. Walking distance from shopping, Leif Erickson Park and the beautiful Rose Garden. Expect lines in the summer, but worth the short wait. You can watch ships and boats out on Lake Superior go into and out of the canal below the Aerial Lift Bridge. Interesting history about the name of the shop, this portion of Duluth was once called Portland, but the post master got upset that they kept receiving other "Portland" cities mail and it was decided to merge Portland into Duluth. A must stop during a lovely walk along Lake Superior for young and old alike!

I ordered the butterscotch malt because of a reviewers recommendation and it was SO good! Can't wait for the chance to have it again!

No trip to Duluth is complete without an Old Fashioned malt from Portland Malt Shop. They are spendy and get more so every year, but they are soo rich and creamy and indulgent! Get one and walk the Lakewalk; it doesn't get any better on a hot day.

Wonderful ice cream treats in various sizes. I enjoy a small treat multiple times every summer! Word spreads fast when it opens in the spring.

There IS generally a line. It moves quickly and is worth it.

We have stopped here quite a few times over the years and this time the ice cream just wasn't all that good. It tasted like cheap grocery store ice cream. There are so many places now where you can get really good homemade style ice cream so you really notice when the quality is not that good. They do not accept credit cards so be aware of that before you order! We had planned to each get a malt but only had $10 cash so settled for cones. What they want you to do is go next door to a gift shop, buy a gift card, then go back to the malt shop and use the gift card. If you are from out of town, what do you do with the balance on the gift card? Totally ridiculous and it has to cost them in sales. It is a cute place, you can't beat the view, but you can get the same view many other places in Duluth. Sadly, we will not stop again.
