Owner description: Watch seagulls soaring while you stroll around this popular spot, part of the revived Duluth waterfront. Nearby are a sculpture garden, jazz clubs, coffee shops, motels and restaurants. If you like ships, stand on the pier and watch huge boats and ships, some from around the world, come and go daily.

Canal Park is a must. The highlight is watching the ships go under the lift bridge--and that is free. There is a wonderful marine museum by the bridge, and a beautiful walkway by the lake that goes for miles. All free. Take your saved money and go to the Portland Malt shop--by Fitgers--for a REAL malt. Lots of restaurants in the vicinity, and some fun shopping.

If you remember Duluth as a dark and dirty town as I did from my childhood, think again. Canal Park is a beautiful area with nice shops and a great board walk. I love the free Marine Museum and when a laker or salty goes out the breakwaters to Lake Superior.

A trip to Duluth would not be complete without a trip to Canal Park! Above it all - towers the beautiful Aerial Lift Bridge - connecting the park area to a 7-mile long sandbar - known to the "locals" as Park Point. Park Point is home to many very lucky Duluthians. Take a trip down to the end of this very quaint residential area - and, if you're lucky - you'll "get bridged" on your return trip!! All in the wonderful experience of "Park Point."

While at Canal Park - you can watch a variety of large lake vessels as well as ocean going freighters. Seagulls are everywhere and ready to snatch that food out of your hand if you're not paying attention!! Truly a favorite of young and old alike. Many awesome shops selling just about anything you can imagine are scattered along Canal Park Drive and Minnesota Avenue. Restaurants and micro breweries abound in Canal Park. Grandma's Saloon and Deli seems to be a favorite of tourists and locals alike. If you are hungry - you will most likely find an establishment to satisfy even the most discriminating taste buds!!

Speaking of Grandma's Saloon and Deli - the world class "Grandma's Marathon" finish line - is just a short distance from the restaurant. Always the 3rd Saturday in June, annually - the popular marathon draws visitors from all over the world. Perhaps the largest event of the year here in Duluth. Come cheer on the runners! It is a great and festive event!!

There are many ways to get around our beautiful city. The Port Town Trolley will take you on a mini tour of the downtown and Canal Park area for only a quarter (or close to that). Bikes, surreys, and segways are just some of the modes of transportation for rent in the Canal Park area. Best of all - hop aboard one of the many horse drawn carriages. Nostalgic, romantic - and the clip-clop of the horses can be down right hypnotic. Definitely - a MUST!

Canal Park - Duluth's Tourist Mecca is calling you.... Answer the call - you'll be so happy you did!!

There are so many things to do here.

Start the Lakewalk along the shores of Lake Superior.

Shopping nirvana!

Restaurants of every type.

Watch the ships.

Parking is a hassle. No free parking in the summer so don't be fooled thinking there is. You can park for free at a restaurant, but they watch to make sure you are going there. Same for the hotels.

Otherwise, so many options including horse carriage rides

Don't get me wrong, Canal Park is the heat of Duluth and you can't miss it. But if you want to explore the area, don't come during a major festival like Tall Ships. We went to see the ships one day and wanted to explore Canal Park part of the second, but the crowds of people snatched up every available parking spot within walking distance, and the few remaining were being sold for an exorbitant fee (which we had already paid the previous day to see the ships). Some stores/buildings had their own private lots but even those were full, and the one antique shop we wanted to go into (lots of antique toys in the window) didn't have any such thing. In one case, there was a lot that had meters that advertised 25 cents an hour with spaces available, but when we pulled in they tried to sell us a parking pass for $10. We "passed" since we only wanted to explore for an hour or less.

Come explore this area some time when it's not choking with people.
